new exhaust sound - Megan racing or HFC ?

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Hi guys,

I got a new Ex35, what a great whip! :)

One thing I would like to improve is the sound. I would like something a bit wilder, say like a stock G37 or a tiny bit more. I went through this forum and youtube videos, and I was wondering if anyone tried the Megan Racing axle-back WITHOUT any other modifications. Does it make a difference on its own?

There are a few youtube videos with the Megan but combined with HFC (high flow catalyst) or cut resonator, or Megan only on a G37 car. Nothing stock EX35 with Megan only.

2-Instead of changing the main muffler, should I do something else that could be easily reversed? I think cutting the resonator is cheap but cannot be reversed. HFC are more expensive i think but could do the trick. Any ideas/recommendations to get a better sound?

thanks

stock G37 exhaust is a straight bolt on to the EX. Ive done it and it sounds SICK. Much less expensive.

im a bit surprised that it would be cheaper.... if its a new Infiniti part... unless its from a scrap yard. But thanks for input... Ive been trying to convince wifey to 'invest' in the sound of our new EX with either the Megan or the BerkTech cats in vain :tisk:

You are looking at my car with the Megan + Berk HFC on youtube.

Here are my suggestions for you since you are going to pick either or.

With only HFC, your EX will not going to sound louder than a stock G37 coupe. Your car will still be quiet cruising on the highway and almost guaranteed no complain from wife. When you step on it, its going to sound mean, but not from your exhaust, its from your HFC. If you are looking at performance gain, no doubt going with HFC.

You wanted to have deeper sound. I will say go with Megan or any other axle back exhaust system. Good thing about Megan is that they come with silencers. So you get to choose loud or quiet and it only take minutes to install/uninstall the silencers. Someone mentioned G37 exhaust. No not from sedan but from a coupe. You can find them anywhere from $100 to $400. It will look stock, but I believe the tips sets a little too inward. you will probably need to chop them and pull the tip further back to make it look nicer.

I think Megan is best for you right now. Its easy to install with simple tools and you can do it yourself w/o paying someone to do it. If you don't like it, just take it off and sell to another EX owner or G37 coupe owner. HFC are PITA to install/uninstall and shops will charge you a lot to do this type of jobs.

sweet thanks. Is the Megan-only (on its own) that different from stock? Anything a bit wilder than stock will do.

I will run this by wifey.

Your whip is sick btw!

What really change the exhaust tone on the EX is the rear muffler section. Before the rear section I can almost guaranteed that our exhaust system is no different from G37 coupe.

This may sound silly, but what what kind of exhaust system would you recommend if I am looking for more of a 370z exhaust tone/stillen exhaust tones I have heard on some G37's and 370z's. I saw your youtube video and it sounds to raspy for me, I am more into a heavy yet softer sound (one may say even like the GTR R35 stock exhaust sound).

My car sounds raspy mainly because of the HFC.
I would probably suggest using a G37 coupe exhaust and maybe change the exhuast tip to fine tune the sound to your liking.
Some exhaust tips actually gives you a deeper tone. However I still don't think it will sound louder than stock G37.

From the youtube videos I saw, an EX35 with the Megan axle back will sound very different (greater muffling) than a G37 coupe with the Megan axle back. Are you sure of this?

I can find only 2 EXs with Megan exhaust on YouTube
One is my car which also got the HFC, another one has resonator delete which will change the tone completely
I am not 100% sure if EX with Megan will sounds very much like the G37 with Megan, but my guess is very close
I have no idea how Infiniti did it but when I get under a EX35, G37, and FX35 you will noticed that all three system look identical but all sounded different.

I would say the cats are different from say a G35 and the EX 3.5 VQ engine. Even though the exhaust systems look identical, this would explain the difference in sound and slight decrease in HP due to increased muffling in the EX.

thanks for your pointers Eibach

Nothing wrong with the tip length of the G37 muffler.

Mine is a 2008 off of eBay for $80.00.

Combined with the Stillen long tube intake it makes a marvelous sound.

I am almost 100% sure that the cat itself is exactly the same for all VQ35HR (At least my is same as the G37 cat)
The power difference is more of ECU tuning rather than the exhaust system

From what I have noticed, EX35 is the only VQ35HR that share the same restrict exhaust system design that is used on G37 coupe and 370Z

This is what I think and most likely to be the fact is that the EX35 uses newer and more restrict exhaust system for VQ37 with a VQ35 motor

EX is designed based on the coupe, and suppose to equip with VQ37HR since 2008
Since the car is designed based on the newer coupe FM platform, we uses the same type of exhaust system as the G37 and 370Z. Stupid Nissan/Infiniti marketing people worried that potential FX35 buyers will buy more EX37 over FX35 due to its high performance, they dump VQ3HR in it with 5 speed transmission. That is why the rest of the world is getting the EX37 and we are sticking with the EX35. Until there is FX37, there will be no EX37 here in the state.

The EX's FM platform is shared with the G35 sedan, as well as the G37 coupe and FX.
