I have megan coilover kit: 8k, 6k spring rate. I've put it to softest setting at arount 25-32. Ride was harsh at first but gotten alot softer. Still abit harsh for everyday but bareable. Anyone mess with their Megan Coilover preload settings yet? any results in comfort? Let me know 'cause i want a softer ride for everyday driving if possible. Oh, and this is for an S13 chassis. I've putted about 1k miles on my coilovers now too.

From my experience w/ my kts coilovers, 8/6 also, you may not want to ride at the softest settings - those are for lower spring rates.

Also, usually ppl refer 0-32 or 0-16 w/ 0 being softest.

I currently have mine set up @ 5/5 front and rear out of 15 or 16.

When i had it at full soft, it wasn't as rigid, but much more "bouncy" like the shock wasn't compressing. Found out that's because my dampening was so soft that the shock wouldn't compress correctly for the spring rate.

Try kicking it up a little and see...

O yea, and I don't think it's preload setting - preload is usually referring to spring preload, which is something completely different, if you are asking about that.

So preloading from factory manufactorer should be left alone? I thought after messing with the dampening settings and not getting better for daily ride, I should mess with the preloading of springs. This i'm referring to the two adjusting knobs that holds the spring in tension to the upper mount. I was thinking of lowering those two locking adjusters. Whats' my effect of it? more spring travel? softer, bouncer, ?? ?

Ok, spring preloading gets complicated... to say the least. I'll let spl parts explain it:
Preloading the spring allows more stroke/travel for the shock, which is very important; if the shock stroke/travel is too short you will be constantly hitting the bump stop. However, preloading the spring too much can create problems - it would become easier for the tire to lift off the ground when the weight transfers away from that corner, and it would also effectively increase the spring rate.

So ideally you want to preload the spring to where you get sufficient shock stroke/travel, and get your remaining ride height through the lengthening/shortening the coilover assembly.

Tip: You can use a ziptie tied around the shock piston to check the maximum stroke/travel - tie it round the bottom and when the shock compresses the ziptie will be moved upwards. If it reaches the upper mount you may not have sufficient stroke/travel.

Keep in mind sometimes you may not be able to adjust the coilover to where you get enough shock stroke/travel, you may have lowered the car too much. For best performance, you may have to reduce the drop to ensure sufficient suspension travel.[/img]

I'm still not personally clear on teh bump stop test, but it's a standard test that I'm sure someone can explain in better detail.

Well, to end this post, I've set my fronts at 20 and rears at 16 w/ 0 as hard and 32 soft. To my surpise, it got softer and less bouncier than at max soft. Thanks for the help brokeAs240sx
