So I have searched for this multiple ways but haven't had success. I have however seen tons of exhaust threads comparing price, sound, performance and look. Element 114 compared to Stillen compared to Megan Racing compared to HKS compared to Junction Production etc etc.....

So here is the dilemma that I know others have shared. I do not want a loud exhaust, but would like to open up some of the restriction and gain an extra bit hp/tq. So I am looking to only add the Megan Mid Pipes (or a custom made version) and keep the OEM mufflers. Has anyone heard this combo and if so, how did it sound and are there any performance or dyno results?

Thanks for any info!

I'd be interested in something like this is as well. An exhaust that keeps the stock amount of noise (not so much the type as long as it sounds good but the amount).

With that said, I want to warn you that by replacing any portion of the exhaust system before the OEM mufflers won't bring the performance gains, or even sound, that you are hoping for. The most restrictive portion of our exhaust is the muffler and, while replacing any portion before the muffler will allow for exhaust fumes to flow thru the piping, the fumes will still need to pass thru (or rather "be restricted by") the OEM mufflers. It'll be a "one step forward, two step backwards" sort of situation if you replaced any section before the OEM mufflers.

As a side note, I believe those who have replaced their OEM mufflers with Megan Axle-Back Exhaust have been satisfied and have mentioned that it does not greatly increase the exhaust noise or drone. Have you considered that option?

:)
I have considered and researched that option. It did not seem there were really any performance gains from just the axle-back exhaust options, however the sound increase would be acceptable.

The reason I was looking at just the Mid Pipe section is because I thought I had heard and read that the M45 mufflers were actually a fairly free flowing design, all though the pipe from the muffler to the mid pipe is small and to your point would restrict airflow. Maybe I am mistaken on the effectivness of the OEM mufflers though? :gotme

I had the same problem...first i want for magnaflow mufflers and 2.5 piping, not the sound that i was looking for and did not feel any different in hp...waste of money if ask me!!!
Bought a megan mid pipe and put the stock mufflers back...love the way it sounds now omg...just the sound i was looking for. This is the way that the m45 sport should sound Like from the factory :) the car feels quicker also and absolutely noooo drone!!!!

The only single upgrade to the exhaust system that will show any significant gains is a set of high flow catalytic converters.
You will hear a slightly different exhaust note and free up the most restrictive part of the entire exhaust system.
The other stuff will add maybe 1 or 2 hp and cosmetic differences.

I heard from someone on here that he tried just doing the mid pipes and didnt get any gains. It was for the reason stated above, the exhaust although less restricted in its path gets all held up at the mufflers smaller diameter still and wont give any performance boost.

Thanks for info. Do you happen to know if he proved or validated this with a dyno or his butt?

I completely understand the logic. What causes me to ask the question is I have seen dyno proven gains with Y-pipe only mods on other Nissan vehicles and they in theory would have had the same "type" of restrictions with exit through the OEM mufflers as well.
