The obd1 distributors have an internal optical CAS. The actual hardware is basically usable, but the optical disc/wheel is not. It has 360 small slits around the outer edge, and another set that is inboard (forget the count arrangement).
With a proper disc swapped in, the optical unit can be used to feed the MS a tach signal. A ignition output from the ms could then be used to feed a simple HEI unit, which would fire the distributor and coil properly.
The Z car guys have been doing this, we may be able to use the disc that they use (dont know which?). A mitsubishi or mazda disc could possibly be fit as well, certain versions of these have the proper cut.
What we are looking for is a disc with 4 slits around the outer edge, and then inboard on the disc, a single slit to sync everything up. The trigger angle in the MS can be adjusted for this, we just need a single slit.
I was doing a little bit of reading on this because I want to set up a kit to squirt the obd1 nissans using as much oem hardware as possible. This would consist of a ecu harness connector adapter, distributor wheel/HEI mod, and a few small wiring changes in the fuse box.
There was some discussion on the MSEFI.com board about the nissan, do a search on there for some more detail. The obd2 distributors with the internal coil might be able to work with modification, but will be more work. Best to stick with a simple external coil type.
