nOOb in the house. Sort of. A Nissan noob anyway.

I've done two things that I thought I'd never do in the past couple months. One was buying an iPad, the other... buying a Nissan Sentra.

Both, however... have been surprisingly incredible.

I come originally from the muddy world of Subaru (no, not NASIOC... I hate NASIOC) and rally, having owned quite a few. I still have one, a 2000 Outback - lifted on rally coilovers and probably the most bizzarely angry station wagon anyone has ever met. Affectionately named Ludwig.

Unfortunately, as Subarus do at times, Ludwig ate his headgaskets on a trip home to Tennessee from college. Likely my fault for not having the heads redecked last time I had the engine apart. :tisk: I knew that was stupid. Even better was the fact that I had to be back in Kansas to start a new job in two days. Long, really boring story short, I found myself at CarMax in Memphis, TN about 10 minutes before they closed. I needed some sort of econobox.

"I need to see a list of everything on the lot with a manual transmission."

"We have 13 cars with manuals on the lot."

Civic, Civic, Civic, Corolla, Sentra, Sentra, Mazda3, Mazda3, Focus, Sentra SE-R SpecV, Mazda3...

Obviously I needed to see what all this SE-R SpecV shenanigans was all about. The longer the name the cooler the car, right? Like the Subaru Impreza WRX STI Spec.C Type RA-R. :) Anyway....

I found myself test driving it. The gearbox was that of a proper Datsun. All clanky and such. It handled well. It was quiet. Stiff, but compliant. It would do the job. Signed papers the next morning.

It wasn't until I picked it up that I noticed the interior. This tells you how exhausted I was in shopping for a car. I was delighted at all the fancy red-stitched trimmings... reminded me of the Forester STI interior I had in another Subaru. They washed it, then brought it around, and off I went. The drive home was when I finally realized that this car was going to be more than just a way to get to work. It was going to actually be... fun.

It needed a name. And a gender. I at first thought she was a boy... of the anime-superhero cartoonish variety. But later, decided otherwise, and she was named Sora (Japanese for "sky"), which just so happened to fit in to our rally team's naming scheme. Didn't plan it that way, but hey, cool. She's a classy little lady for the most part, a bit full of herself at times, and every once in a while, mad b**** crazy. I like cars with crazy personalities. My Outback is like an angry, old, self-conflicted composer, and thus his name fits. Sora is the sky princess, and her personality fits. I probably sound a little crazy here, but that's likely because I am.

And thus, I drive a Nissan Sentra named Sora, and I love her. No mods as of yet. I plan on winter tires first, then a set of 17x7.5 Rota SVN's in bronze... shod in summer performance rubber next spring. After that, coilovers? As you can tell from the confused nature of this post, I'm new to the Nissan scene. Tint. Oh yes, I need tint.

Enough of my rambling. This is a forum. You want pictures. Pictures are awesome. So lets have them.

Might as well throw one in of my muddy buddy as well. He gets jealous of the new girl.

Welcome to NICO! I'm guessing you already know this, but in case you don't: Sora Blue is an official Nissan Paint Color, most often used on it's classic cars (pre-1970). Here's a 1964 Roadster wearing that paint. Ours will too, one day.

As for naming cars, all of our classics have names and they are all girls. ;)

1960 310 Bluebird - Maggie
1963 NL320 Pickup - Peanut
1967 WRL411 Wagon - Alice
1967.5 SPL311 Roadster - Marilyn
1968 510 - Black Betty
1972 240Z - Bella
1993 240sx Vert - Jezebel

Thanks for the welcome!

I found that out shortly after picking the name. :) And last week, saw a Sora blue car like the one pictured, and nearly walked in to a pole while looking at it.

You can definitely tell that I wrote that post at ~2am... lol. I should probably add a little about myself.

Name's Zach. I'm a sophomore at Kansas State University... majoring as a Professional Pilot with a minor in Aviation Safety. In my spare time I enjoy long rallies on the beach, building engines, building rally cars, detailing cars, reading books, and photography. As previously mentioned... my background involves a lot of Subaru, but I'm also fluent in Chevy truck (have a couple on the farm back home) and a I can speak a bit of BMW and Audi. I'm generally pretty open-minded when it comes to different cars, which a lot of people don't know. "This guy's a Subaru fanboi". Not rally. I mean, really. Every car is good at something. Except the Toyota Venza. Don't get me started on that thing.

Some pics of other stuff I've worked on:

'92 Chevy K1500. My first real vehicle. 383ci budget stroker build with stock heads. Massive low end torque, but it all fades at 3500RPM. :squint:

Image

'96 K1500... friend of mine having a little fun while I shoot him in the snow.

Image

At work I do oil changes, help with inspections, and do some other maintenance/detailing things with these...

Image

Friend of mine's Audi that she uses for rally shenanigans.

Image

My mother's beloved '95 K1500 Suburban... named Drednaught.

Image

Image

Image

Image

'07 Z4 M Coupe. Loved that thing.

Image

Also a smattering of other things, just whatever needs to be worked on.

So with that being said,

Who wants to tell me some things about my car? I keep hearing the words 'precat failure' related to 'headgasket' and that has me a little worried, but I'm not sure if that problem continues in the B16 QR25DE. My clutch pedal also squeaks... I think it's the pivot on the pedal itself, I need to look into that. On occasion though, the clutch feels odd when shifting, particularly when driven more aggressively... you can almost feel it disengaging through your foot when you punch in to shift, and engage again on the way out. I suppose that may be normal... this is my first car with a transaxle, but I'm not really sure. And one last question. Does anyone make a short-throw kit for this thing?

Couple new pics - we just finished up the build on my friend's rally car. '02 2.5RS 5spd - all caged up. Engine is near stock spec, just rocking some Cosworth race bearings and JE piston rings with the usual intake/exhaust boltons. This car and Sora would have competed together in G-stock class... I'm thinking not any more.

Welcome and very nice photography work!!!

About the clutch squeak, if you find out how to fix it please let me know. And I think you're right, it's in the pivot somewhere. I thought it was the spring and tried all kinds of lubricant but to no avail. There some sort of plastic bushing attached to it and I thought that might be causing it also, anyway if you find a fix please post up - there are a lot of complaints about that. About the STS, TWM Performance makes one for the B16 so check out their website, seems to be a good product according to others. Love the colour of your car also, had to settle for black as there were no blue ones in stock when I got mine.

Excellent info on the short-throws. :) Bookmarked for birthday reference.

Glad to know I'm not the only one with the clutch pedal squeak. I may look into it at some point, but as of right now it's not bothering me too much. I just wanted to make sure nothing was about to break, explode, or otherwise spontaneously combust.

Look at your clutch pedal, it's in the spring. Push it in and wd-40 it. Work it in and out it should go away. You can use white lithium after the WD for a longer lasting fix. We'd get this all the time at Nissan :)

BTW. The B15's have the same squeak, in the same spring lol.

Welcome to NICO!
I too am a huge fan of rally, although I don't do it myself (not too much rallying going on in Jackson Mississippi...)

I like that color a lot! I also like your other/past vehicles. You definitely have some good photography skills. What camera are you shooting. Think you can get any interior shots of your Nissan?

Mississippi, eh? I grew up just north of Corinth... Right across the border in Tennessee. The lack of rally there is a bit depressing, and the locals really don't smile upon people ripping down the twisty dirt backroads in heavily modded AWD wagons (not that I ever did that, or made the locals mad or anything... You know.... ). Local law enforcement will also tell you that having a valid RallyAmerica license does not make it okay.

My taste in cars is widely varied, though I tend to lean toward cars that are practical and good at many things. My Outback was a perfect jack of all trades, from competing in rallycross to towing trailers to getting groceries, and growling at pedestrians. I drove it like it was a MINI... A 4000lb MINI. He corners shockingly well for his size, and any time you feel it subpar, all I have to do is let off the throttle, turn in, and tap the brakes. Massive lifted station wagon oversteer is probably the most fun one can experience on a race course. I spent a couple summers driving that M coupe every day, all 340rwhp of it (just had an ecu reflash and axle backs) and loved it for just being obscenely fast and handling like nothing else on the road. However, it was so fragile... And I could barely fit a meal's worth of groceries in the back. Now I just gripe about my stuff in the trunk banging against Sora's big V-brace all the time.

I shoot with a budget setup - Canon EOS Rebel XS and the stock 18-55is kit lens plus the 55-250is and a few filters. I keep wanting more glass, but end up spending cash on car stuff instead normally. I'll see about some interior shots. ;)

Every day that I drive Sora I love her more. In two months I've added 7000 miles to her odometer. We're getting along well, it seems.

It's the infamous Home Depot garage door weatherstrip lip... just figured I'd try to see what a lip looks like on the car, and whether or not I can drive with one without destroying it. Eventually if I find something real to replace it with, I may. :)

Rolling in after the fastest run I pulled of the day. While she didn't keep up with her only competitor in G-Stock (it was running slicks) she did tromp a couple Mazdaspeed3's and one rather poorly-driven WRX.

Second in class, which isn't too bad considering the car that won was a Mazda MP3 running full slicks and a veteran member driver. I was only 3sec behind him every run though, except for one where I was faster (he got loose and found the grass on the first run... lol). Really cool guy though, gave me a lot of pointers and showed me where I could be faster. He really liked Sora too. :)

I tend to be slow = smooth = fast, but apparently he says that I should be a little more aggressive.

Naaaah. It doesn't get too bad up here. Our biggest problem is our local city plow crew only plows once at the beginning of snowfall... and whatever falls behind them just piles up and gets packed in, and it seems like they never plow it again. So we spend lots of time driving on hardpack snow/ice mix.

And I need to keep up with my buddy in his WRX. He's running Michelin AlpinSports... so without some winter shoes I have no chance of being able to hang with him at all.
