That video is pure, 100%, unadulterated wannabe Steel Battalion.

But that's not a bad thing at all.

How can you say that. Steel Battalion was released 2002, the Mechwarrior series started in 1989.

If you read the entire article, the only thing that makes it more like steel battalion is the deeper immersion of being actually IN the cockpit of the mech, minus the huge controller setup. Which i have to say was one of the very few flaws in the mechwarrior games. Generally they've played more like a vehicle shooter, then a "I"m driving a 80 ton DEATH MACHINE!!!" game.

Doesn't matter. The feel of the video was not like any of the previous Mechwarrior games, it was like Steel Battalion. I've played most of the existing MW games and Steel Battalion, so I'm pretty well equipped to compare. The urban setting, dodging behind the building to avoid the rockets, the cockpit view, the overhead probe thingy, the guy punching buttons in the cockpit, the multiple (albeit nonfunctional) displays in the cockpit...that's all SB, not MW.

But as I said, that's not a bad thing, because SB is superior gameplay-wise to existing MW games anyway, so a combination of SB-style gameplay with the excellent BattleTech universe could be epic.

Agreed,I've played every MW game at some point, but I've never played SB. The newer mechwarrior games did incorporate more urban environments. (Mercenaries, and MechAssault). But while they may be adapting play features from SB, they're really just adding stuff that existed in the battletech universe but was never implemented in the games. Hopefully it ends up being as epic as it looks.

And if they pull off the co-op, online campaign feature they talked about...

Co-op makes EVERYTHING better.

I forgot about Mechassult. Those were fun but the actioniness really killed the MW feel.

What were the games that preceded Tribes and tribes two? Might have been Mech Assault. I remember building my 1ghz gaming hig just to play those games. And Tribes is awesome btw.I hope to pick this one up when it comes out.

Just saw the vid - this thing can't arrive soon enough! Its a little hard for me to call it wannabe Steel Battalion though as there isn't a version of SB that I can play on my 360.

I'd love to see it be successful enough to warrant CapCom coing out with a new Steel Battalion, maybe Titanium Battalion?

I loved the original Mechassault and can't count the controllers that I wore out climbing to the top of the XBL Leaderboards. But despite its arcade styled goodness I wanted a more tactical game and this new one looks just like what the doctor ordered. A reboot of the universe with the original houses (there's a mention of House Kurita on the vid) is godd idea too as the Clans seemed to take away a lot of the grit of the House vs House warfare of the crumbling empire.

Its incredibly disappointing that its currently listed as 1 player though. I'd love to have a huge 8, 16, or 32 player online battle. This is now a very large blip on my gaming radar.

I'm not really into the whole Mesh Universe, but this game actually looks like it would be fun. I'm just curious as to how many hours of gameplay you would have.

After having read some of the interviews with developers I'm betting at different achievements for each mech weight class. So there are three or four replays there to get those achievements.

Not that I expect the missions do very different, just the way in which they are approached.

It seems like the game is still a long way out though, its hard to imagine the game will not involve multi-player though.

Cool stuff.

We used to have network parties playing mechwarrior II.

It had buildings you could hide behind, tons of views (including a view that allows you to ride in on your missiles) and a down view for the death from above move.

This was in 1995.

They look really slow. The whole video was two robots standing across from each other just shooting.

I hope it's not just that.

Mechwarrior trys to simulate what real mech combat would be like so theres no anime style mech combat here.

Exactly. I don't want bouncy transforming ninja katana robo karate. I want big, slow, world-threateningly powerful robots. That's why I play MW and SB instead of bouncy transforming ninja katana robo karate crap.

well I had to clean myself up after watching the video.

Let it be known, I am a big robot nerd. From fast gameplay to strategic as long as it has robots I am in. The game looks sick, plus it's going to be on the 360!!!

I have been a huge Mech fan since I was kid....I played the crap out of Mechwarrior, good find.

anybody tried Chromehounds for the 360? I have it and I like it.

Yeah i have it, it's a decent game. My copy has some WICKED scratches in it and freezes up alot (I've buffed it like 3 times), but when it works it's fun.

I like what MOD said earlier

i also have a couple of Armored Core games, I MUCH prefer the army destroying capabilities of a mech to the fast "ninja" bots.

I was still really active over at the SB.org forums when chromehounds (crotchhounds, as we came to not-so-affectionately refer to it) came out. I didn't have a 360 at the time, but feedback from the other SB guys wasn't too positive. Granted, we're all pretty jaded as far as mech games go, but Crotch Hounds seemed too focused on multiplayer-style fast action and didn't really have any depth at all.

QFT.

A friend gave me Chromehounds when he got bored with it and I still felt cheated after I played it.

I have much higher expectations for MechWarrior.
