Ok, I searched for a long time and still can't find exactly what I am looking for. Please don't flame the crap out of me for asking this:

Due to an accident in my s13, I have recently picked up a (somewhat) running s14. I'm leaking oil pretty badly and have always wanted to build a KA-t so I have decided to spend a nice chunk of change at the local machine shop. In my garage sits a complete s13 ka24de motor with all accessories. Outside on the curb sits a complete but wrecked in the rear s13. My question is, can I use the block and the head from the s13 in my garage or sitting in the wrecked car, get it bored, balanced, polished, and rebuilt then drop it into the s14? I know there are some electrical differences what with the obd2 and all. I've also heard the cams are different...

I can reuse all the stuff from the s14 such as mani's, sensors, exhaust, vacuum lines, etc. I'm trying to determine from asking this what physical/mechanical differences exist between the s13 KA and the S14 KA when it comes to the head and the block. What internals are different? What am I going to have to look out for basically...

If it makes a difference, I was going to use a 5 speed from an s14 when it goes back into the car. I've read everything about the auto to manual swap and am not asking about that. I'm basically trying to figure out now if I can use my s13 block and head in my s14.

Again, please dont flame me for asking this. I've seen one or two things on here that allude to the differences between the two motors, but I haven't found a definitive source for all of it in one place. Maybe this deserves a sticky?

Okay, so there is a compression difference... I was going to use forged pistons with a lower compression anyway.

I know theres gotta be more...

Lots of emmisions/ diagnostics and cams come to mind first

Yea, I know about the cams and emissions and obd2...

I'm just trying to figure out if I can use the block and the head. I realize I will have to use s14 components to build it up and get it running. I will use the s14 harnesses, hoses, distributor, sensors, ecu, injectors, fuel rail, cams, manifolds, etc. I just want to know if there is any difference between a stripped down s13 head/block vs an s14 stripped down head/block.

ka24de blocks are the same. No difference. Heads are different. s13 and s14 95/96 heads are similar because they have the extra oil galley journals for the cams at the rear. 97/98 heads lack those rear journals. All the emissions crap is in the intake manifolds and is the only real difference.

The valve covers and front covers is where the biggest differences come in. If you use an s13 head you need to use an s13 valve cover and front covers. If you use an s14 head you need to use s14 stuff.

You can swap heads around between s13 and s14 blocks just make sure you use the appropriate matching hardware.

Like I said, the intake manifolds are where all the sensor are and must be re-used no matter what head or block is used.

Thats good info. Thank you VERY much. I think my block is going to the machine shop this week.

When using the s13 head, you mentioned I have to use the s13 valve and timing covers. On the timing cover, that just means the top half correct? Or would I have to use the bottom front cover as well? Will the s13 front cover for the head seal against the s14 front cover for the block? I guess thats a matter of RTV, lol, but I'd rather it be a proper seal...

I think the covers have different sized holes. I would just use either s13 or s14....both halves.
