Sorry if I'm in the wrong room. Nico first timer (first time chat room for that matter). I've got a 94 240sx that is surging or kicking and shutting down at lights occasionally for weeks and has now begun smoking. I've been through 3 mechanics none of their computers find anything and they have no guess what the problem is. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated! Thanks

My first guess on something like that will be the TPS.

180fan is correct in suspecting a TPS.

it could also be a MAF problem since it runs, smokes, and stalls at stops. check to make sure its connected firmly. also check to see there are no opens or shorts.

is your ECU flashing any sort of code? if you search for the OBDI DTC chart on the forums, you might be able to more accurately diagnose the problem.

i wonder why the mechanics couldn't figure it out. must be really bad or they just suck.

Mine used to do that right before the injector went bad...

Thanks for all of the info. Much more info than I've gotten from the mechanics. One had no means of running diagnostics. Local Nissan dealer said that the model was too old to even run diagnostics on at all but he could "fish for the problem" at 100 bucks an hour. Mechanic that could run codes said that the computer couldn't recognize any problem at all. Said to drive it until it quit running and then the computer might recognize the problem. I love the car and hate to simply park the thing. Thanks again for all of your help. B
