A 60 second keg stand??? I hang out with some people that do alot of drinking and they top out in the mid 20 second range!
The issue goes beyond who pays. The event was sponsored by the school; i.e. the school encouraged and ok'd it. A student (laywer) could claim that the student didn't want to be left out or seem odd and, following the example of his elders (those who dish out the grades/impact their future) drank a bit too much and ran a stop sign. Criminal act, no, but there's potential for a civil suit.Maybe state law makes a difference, but there were big changes at my shool regarding such functions exactly becuase of things that happened and liability issues. A social function like that would be strictly a social function. I.e., an invitation or an email could not say something like, "M.E. Dept invites you to dinner at Professor Brainiac's place". And academic groups/fraternities could no longer do things as groups and fraternities (tied to the school in any way). Initiation week for Pi Tau Sigma was terminated.
