If you're going wide enough to need fender mods (which is basically all of RimTuck) then you don't need to be as concerned about what will fit b/c you're going to make it fit anyway
As far as measuring to fit what you have with minimal mods... test fitting is key and suggestions are only opinions... just like my approach and yours... neither is wrong
I've been doing this since 2000... and this method is what's worked for me. The only time I took someone's word on something without checking for myself was the only time I bought a part that wouldn't work (it was on this forum and was suggested by a respected member... honest mistake but was an expensive one since it was dealing with hubs)
I was running stock fenders and 9 +15R/ 9.5 +22R on my old setup and will be running 9.5 +15 / 10.5 +18 on my new setup for reference... but I have a fender roller and don't care if I have to do body work... if you want to stick within a stock fender with only minor rolling I'd recommend playing with some rim/tire combos you might have avail from your friends etc
