Since McCain's history as a war hero for the United States has been brought up a zillion times, I've done a lot of searching into that issue. I'm not going to discredit him for alleged anti-US comments he made in captivity as I believe he was, or would have been tortured otherwise. In the book Scars and Stripes many captured servicemen describe the treatment they received. I don't know if I would have been able to take it or not. However, many didn't roll on their country, yet others had no choice.
I do think McCain got a pass on many things. Like poor performance at the academy as well as poor performance in pilot training. however, at least 4 of the aircraft he lost could rightly be called accidents.
However, I do believe he received favorable treatment due to his fathers and grandfathers positionin the Navy. Look at this blurb I found
"McCain had roughly 20 hours in combat," explains Bill Bell, a veteran of Vietnam and former chief of the U.S. Office for POW/MIA Affairs -- the first official U.S. representative in Vietnam since the 1973 fall of Saigon. "Since McCain got 28 medals," Bell continues, "that equals out to about a medal-and-a-half for each hour he spent in combat.
Maybe we should look at the issue of whether or not he is a "combat" hero.
