Because we have different forms of mass media such as TV and the print media, and how many times do we hear the candidates saying the same things for a week or so on TV day in and day out? I know I heard Palin's speech from the convention a couple of times afterwards from her own mouth in different locations. Why? If you're going to talk, talk about something new because chances are we've already heard it if you're repeating it. In the UK, campaigning for PM is only a number of weeks.
Agreed,
We actually had our Governor suspend his campaigning (a couple of times this year) to take care of recovery efforts during flooding. He did so because he was the elected head of the state and it's his job to oversee these types of efforts. With 3 of the 4 Candidates in this election being elected Senators first, I would expect that their asses to be in Washington DC, in the Senate Chambers doing their job, which is crafting, hearing discussion on and voting on legislation.
Had Hurricane Katrina been one year late and hit August of 2006, do you think any politician up for re-election in the Gulf Coast would have gotten a free pass to go campaigning? Hell no.
