Notice the all alloy MB 5L V8 as fitted to the new E500 produces 339 ft. lb. from 2700-4250 rpm, and peaks at 5600 rpm (302hp). Old VH45DE with 4 valves per cylinder instead of 3 will produce nearly as much peak torque( if not in as broad a band), and still rev another 1000 to 1700 (with JWT ECU) more rpms. In fact, the current VK45DE compares quite well also. E500 being a couple hundred poonds lighter with a 5 speed auto is quicker to 60 mph, but I am wondering if the 60-80 mph time of 4.0 seconds is that much better than Dennis's admittedly perfect 1990 Q45 with JWT ECU and TCU? The MB requires a shift and the Q does not.

I bet Dennis has some times for his car.

All this and Bi Xenons and adjustable air suspension for $61K (Autoweek 2/17/2003;pp. 68-69) Notice braking with new electronic application is no better (tire limited?) than stock Q (at least the first application).

50-80 mph [in 2nd gear locked] = 5.7 seconds; 60-80= 4.0 seconds.........at 1100 AMSL so knock a few tenths off at sealevel.

Put transmission in 2nd floor it, use stop watch as it crosses 50/60 then get your reaction time down so that an average of 4-5 runs will be accurate to 0.2 seconds.

A Ferrari 575M can do 50-80 in 3.7 seconds with an expert driver starting out in 2nd with one shift at 68 mph. Probably takes most owners 4.0 or more......a turbo SRT4 Neon take 4.8.

Comparing on the road Manual to AT acceleration is one thing but what is the manual drivers reaction time in down shifting and do they always pick the correct gear to maximize? At 50 mph would they chose 2nd gear knowing they would need to shift soon [60 mph] or would they chose 3rd which would mean no shift?

Why you see rolling 50-70 mph tests are usually 0.5-1.0 sec slower for AT transmission downshift time.

A 5 speed [or a 6 speed AT] is optimized for zero to 60 not 50-80 mph as most 4 speed AT are!

I was pleased with 4 speed auto transmission in '03 Maxima SE I drove a few weeks ago... really see no reason to seek out a 5 speed auto for my next car.

The Mercedes I want is the forthcoming AMG E class with the supercharged V8. 117.x mph in the quarter mile is absolutely insane for a 4 door sedan. If only they would dump the technology for the sake of technology stuff and go back to hydraulic brakes and a throttle cable instead of electronic controls that don't work as well.

What's really impressive about the AMG E class is the 0-150 mph times... Automobile magazine did a test of super sedans recently and the MB 0-150 mph time was half of one of the other cars... something like 25 seconds.
