Ok so i just returned from my day with Mazda's RevItUp performance driving school. overall, it was worth the 39 bucks i paid. come to think of it, any sort of automotive event where you get to rag out someone else's car and tires on a closed course is worth 39 bucks any day.
the event started in CA (of course. where else to things start in this country) and wound its way across the southern parts of the US until it stopped in ATL for a couple days. Falken Tires was also there, they were a key sponsor. and lemme tell ya...by 2 or 3 pm, some of these tires were nothing but slicks. which makes me wonder how they fund such an operation.
A single-lap timed run (twice) in a Mazda6 is recorded and set up on a point structure. A Pro sets the standard. Matching the pro gets you 1000 points. each cone knocked over adds 2 secs, etc. etc. Top finishers from each city get sent to Mazda's Laguna Seca to compete for a new RX-8. I, unfortunately, was not one of them.
All in all it was a pretty reasonable event. Granted, the main purpose of this whole thing was to get you to buy their car(s). But hey, i got to check out an RX-8 firsthand, something i could not do at the auto show, and i must say i was impressed. i dig it. the styling, the idea behind the whole car. it was well executed. unfortunately they only had 2 "hand-built" RX-8's on site. Hand built my ***...
kudos to mazda for executing a performance driving instruction event and not wringing out every last ounce of enjoyment.
