To promote the upcoming introduction of Mazda’s smallest car to be sold in this country, the company was handing out Mazda2 Zoom-Zoom energy drinks during the Los Angeles Auto Show media days. The copy on the tin implored its drinkers to “Tap into 100% Zoom-Zoom. And enhance your reality in radical new ways.”
Eric Taub for The New York Times
No, this wasn’t an invitation to take illegal substances — although drinking one on an empty stomach (as I did) was certainly not the smartest thing to do. Instead, the can advertised the implementation of “augmented reality,” a technological trick that is quickly finding its way into a wide range of product promotions, from baseball cards to automobiles.
Hold the tin in front of your Web cam, and a 3-D animated version of the Mazda2 appears on your screen; rotate the can and the car rotates as well. You can even change its color.
A cute gimmick, but will it sell any more cars?
