I have a 07 M45 Sport, and live in Cincinnati. We got some snow last week, nothing major, just a few inches. But this car, with these rims and tires of course, is absolutely the worst car i have ever driven in the snow. I have owned both Mercedes and BMW in the past and didn't think it could get much worse. Of course the tires that come with the sport are certainly not meant for driving in the snow, but based on the very little snow we got, I was surprised. My car is leased to, so not really worth it for me to go out and spend a couple grand on an extra set of tires and rims. I'll just have to steal my wifes E350 4matic next time we get an inch of snow....

Welcome to the world of performance cars and summer tires. Since you do not get much snow there (even though I have lived in your area and have seen a REAL bad winter), park your car and switch to what you describe is a very expensive winter beater.

Buy yourself a good set of winter tires (use Tire Rack recommendations) on a set of cheap alloys (don't try your current alloys - your winter tires should be a smaller size), change them when winter comes, and your summers will last longer. They will also do better in icy conditions.

I use to have 2 sets for a car with AWD that came with summer tires. Winter tires make a BIG difference - about 35% better than even all-weather tires.

Exactly right! The all-season and performance summer tires will simply not work well in snow. They become rock hard in cold weather and simply will not grip. The M is not worse then other brands and cars in this regard ... although AWD would be better.

With a high-powered RWD car, you have to have good snow tires to make it work right. With AWD, snow tires also do better! Without snow tires, what you get is a variation of Paul Simon's song ... "Slip Slidin' Away".
