ok, my starter i think is bad. i have an sr20det in a s13 coupe. the car starts fine in the morning usually. but as soon as it sits at work all day in the sun it will not start on the first several tries. or whenever i drive long distances and the car turnsoff after the turbo timer runs out the car will not start for several tries. the battery i believe is fine because it barely 6 months old and the alternator is fine because i drive around town with the car and never just cuts off. sometimes to make the car turn on i turn the key on and off real quick and that sometimes works after a couple tries. but i feel that the starter is getting hot and shutting off or something, which means its going bad. need help on this???

check your starter relay first.make sure battery terminals are tied, and finally if you have alarm check that too.if it just clicks it may be because the starter is not getting enough juice.

so if its not getting enough juice then the battery might not be powerful enough. but i dont understand why it gets worse when it sits in the sun all day? unless the heat drains the battery or something.

heat adds more resistance to the electrical system. thats why when you start it when its been in the sun/ or hot. try to do a voltage drop in your cranking system and maybe your ignition system.

ummm I have the same problem with my 93 240sx convertible. I just replaced the starter and it is doing better but still kinda doing it. If it doesn't start my dad used to tell me to put it in neutral push it back and then try to turn it on. If it still doesn't work leave it in neutral and push forward and quickly try to turn it on... My 93 is automatic so im not sure if it will work wit manual but i'm pretty sure it does lolz.... well yeah... I'm having some other problems wit my 240, like it sometimes wont change from 1st to 2nd gears in time or not at all... it has 14x,xxx miles on it so i don't know what to do. So if you or anyone you know that can help me please let me know.... thnx Dubbed805

yeah mines a manuel so if i can, i just put it in gear and roll down a hill and dump the clutch if it doesnt start. but i think i should replace the starter and then see what happens.

don't know if thats a good idea. you can check it out and bring it to like autozone/kragen and tell them to test the starter for you. that way your not replacing a good starter and the problem still exist. mostlikely your wiring

This seems more like a battery wire issue than a starter issue. However having the starter bench tested is not going to hurt. I really doubt it is the starter though.

Take a look at your fuses found in the interior fuse box.

yeah i think it could be the battery because it starts fine in the morning. i am using a Miata battery because my cold side of my intercooler piping is in the way if i used a full size 240sx battery. so maybe the battery is not putting out enough juice.

I'm having a very similiar problem. Where is the starter relay? All my fuses test good.

Thanks

woooohoooo, it worked!!!! A short trip to the dealer, and it fired up on the first turn!!!

THANKS A MILLIE SR!!!! I appreciated the link and the pictures. Usually when people start talking about relays, switches, plugs, etc. all I hear is blah blah blah, so the pics really helped.

Send that guy a beer!!!
