hey everybody:

I can't seem to get a good read on how much fluid is in the transmission. It doesn't have any problems and the fluid looks fine, but everytime I check it, whether the engine has been running or not, the fluid is about 2 inches above the top of the "hot" range on the dipstick. It seems to coat the filler spout or something. It's a bit worrisome to me as I want to make sure that the level isn't wrong. Any help appreciated

Billy

Heheh, I have the same problem and asked once. Never did learn the trick of getting the stick out without smearing it. Too full is better than not full enough, though.

I figured as much, since it has been like that for a while..... I've done a drain and fill twice but I just put in as much as I took out to be safe.

Via the white paper towel test? How does it smell?

I don't know that I've done an official white paper towel test, but I change the fluid more frequently than is required and it always comes out looking pretty much like it went in, and smells the same to me. No varnishing, no dark fluid, etc. I'm not really worried about it being too low, but I would be concerned about it being to high since I can't seem to get a good read on how much is in there. I know the FSM says to check it with the engine warmed up, preferably after driving at low speeds, but does the AT need to be in N or in D during the test?

Thanks, it's a small issue but it's bothering me that I can't just look at the stick and tell

Drain and refill lets the best fluid remaining out and keeps the varnish and detritus in.

White paper towel test is easily accomplished. Any change of color is sign of degradation of the fluid.

wrong, wrong, wrong Brian......do you even realize that all the fluid is mixing whenever the engine is running, and that all of it circulates through the pan on its way to the precious cooler line that an exchange machine taps into?
