Hello everyone. First time poster, but if this all pans out I'll probably become frequent.

I've been interested in getting a 300zx or 240sx for quite a while now, and thanks to being crashed in to by someone on a cell phone, I'm trying to turn my tragedy into a blessing.
I came across a '91 300zx NA, manual, with under 70k miles on it and an asking price a little under $7000. The body looks to be in good condition, rust free, stored winters, and all stock except for exhaust and intake. Timing belt has already been replaced, but it's a few hours away from me, so I haven't gone to see it in person yet, and I also just found out it has a bad injector, which will apparently be replaced in the coming week or two.

So I guess what I'm wondering is, should I be worried if the seller only intends on replacing one injector as opposed to all 6? I don't want to have to worry about replacing more right after i grab it, and it sounded like they're just replacing the bad one.
Also, since I'm not really sure how the market goes on these things, how does the price sound? Assuming everything is in working order (all work over the last 3 years has been done by a family member mechanic, as opposed to in a shop) is that price reasonable or no?

I'm hoping this is a good place to ask these questions, but if it's not, I apologize.

Thanks!

Where are you located? $7k is a bit steep for a NA, but thats just me. A lot depends on location, some are higher, some lower. If its clean in and out, and you have the money for it, I would say go for it. If its worth it for you.

Now, on to the bad side. With injectors I would tell him you will buy it only if he replaces all 6 with new style injectors. They are less prone for corrosion from ethanol found in gas. If he just replaces one, chances are the other will not be far behind it. One injector can cost 60-100 when all 6 and the conversion will cost about 600.

HOw are you working on vehicles? Remember, this is a 25 year old car, things will go wrong with it, even at low miles. Finding a mechanic to work on these is getting more difficult, most will not even touch them due to complexity and hard to work on. Some will just plain screw it up. These cars do not like cheap parts, they were over engineered so tolerances are pretty tight.

All in all, I have enjoyed my Z's. They are a blast to drive, engines will last forever if properly taken care of. Being a NA, less things to go wrong, but things fail, part of being a car. I personally think you could have just as many problems with a 10+ year old car. Go see it, drive it, look for any starting issues. Driving issues. Braking issues. If the steering wheel wobbles when braking, could be tension rods for example. Take it on the freeway or get it up to 60ish. Listen for any thud noise when shifting. Sleep on it after you drive it. $7 k is a lot for an older car, but clean ones are getting harder to come by. More people will chime in soon.

I found this guide to be very helpful:

Others have said it, but it's worth repeating that it's hard to estimate how much more it's going to cost to fix up a car that has belonged to others for 25 years. Good luck!
