In 2001 the Altima was still the old 4-cylinder-only design. In my opinion, the looks left a LOT to be desired. The 4 cylinder was a good motor, but nothing next to the Maxima's V6.
The Maxima was lightyears beyond the Altima in 2001. The Altima improved a lot in 2002 and you could get the same V6 that was in the Maxima. But the Max was still nicer inside and a little bigger. The Altima did have independed rear suspension where the Maxima had a solid rear axle, though.
