Someone was telling me that the VQ30DE in the Maxima is rated from the factory at 190hp.. I know this is true, but he also said that the VQ30DE From the I30 or J30 (Not sure what motor the J30 has in it, I think it's a VQ) was rated at 220hp instead of the 190 from the Maxima. Is this true? If so, it should be a direct swap right? I mean if you can just change motors and gain that much power I will probably try to find one of those to start on instead of the one in my car. The only reason I doubt this is because I have never heard of it before.

Thanks

Later VQ30DE maxima's were rated at 220hp as well. I'm pretty sure it has to do with a variable length intake mechanism and ECU changes. The engine internals are the same.

Here's a comparisson:

1999 Maxima: 190hp I30: 190hp

2000:Maxima: 220hpI30: 227hp

2001:Maxima: 222hp (227hp for AE)I30: 227hp

Note: You will not notice a difference between the two when you are only talking a maximum 7hp difference. The internals are the same. Differences may have been ECU related.

Ok, I wasn't sure. I knew the internals were the same, he was probably just talking about the difference made by the 00VI. I was planning on adding the variable intake to mine sometime anyway. I didn'y know there were any ECU changes that would bring up the power, unless it was something tweaked to accomodate the Intake. Thanks guys.

Also, which I didn't mention, the last J30 (1997) did have 210hp. It was based off the VG30DE.

That one may have been the one he was talking about. What do you mean based on the VG? What was different from the VQ?

hmm, what Maverick7687 is talking about is that the Euro spec VQ only have 190hp is true but from 2000 --> the maxima came with a 200hp VQ. So there is still some diff between the U.S Specs and the Euro Specs.

audatious: I just now noticed that the AE '01 has 227 and not 222.. Do you know the reason for the small gain?

I have no idea about the Euro versions. I was simply quoting the specs from Nissan.

I'm not sure. Possibly intake or a ECU tune.

The AE hp was probably just marketing. Individual cars can vary as much as 5 hp.

I believe Nissan threw on a variable muffler, similar to the ones found on the B15 sentras.

The fifth Gen Maximas and I30's (2000-2001) had the VQ30DEK, which is basically the same VQ30DE block but with a variable valve intake.

The extra ponies (220hp vs. 190hp) do not show up, though, until you hit the high end of the RPM band, so you are not going to beat any 4th Gen's off the line. However, if you are at a place where you can legally top it out, then you can wave, "bye-bye."

Personally speaking, I'd rather have an extra 30ft. lbs. of torque at the low end than an extra 30hp at the top end.

Getting to 45mph as fast as I can means the difference between sitting at every red light, or catching the greens in sync.

The J30 had the VG30DE and is also RWD. Whereas the Maxima has the VQ30DE and is FWD.

I used to have a 97 max and I knew a few people with 4th gens who did the 00-01 VI swap and also the 4th gen cefiro VI swap. The 00-01 was proven to have more gain. Not a hard swap to do you should do it man!

00VI is not worth the money man...($350-400? for maybe 20HP to thre crank? please...) Really imo you should spend it some were else. And instead of upgrading to an 2000 VQ30(Which would be quite ridiculous imo) you should just upgrade and swap for a VQ35...

Much more worth it so you get true Variable Valve Timing instead of just Variable Air Intake with the 00VI, not to mention the larger bored out cylinders hence the .5L. for more power And much more!

O and the better looking engine thanks to the intake....lol.
