my 99 maxima is having trouble strating for the past few months and now getting worse. the battery is only about 3 months old. i can crank on it and it just sounds really weak. somtimes it will start eventually, but sometimes when i have tried to crank on it for about five seconds it will get so weak, then it will make a sound like when you try to start a car and it is already started. not sure if it is the starter or electrical. any help will be appreicated. and also where the starter is located.

your starter is on the driver side of the engine bay above the transmission towards the firewall 6" from center.

before the next steps, get your battery tested from where you bought it.

1. check your starter relay

2. check your alternator, your battery shouldnt get that tired, maybe the alternator is not generating enough power, and your car runs off the battery while its on which causes it to have next to no power when trying to start, and starves your ECM and/or fuel pump.

3. fuel system cleaner could help with the delayed ignition b/c the firing chamber may not be getting fuel efficiently.

anyone else welcome to take a stab at it

i will start with your suggestions. thanks for the location to the starter. i will look at that some time and see if i can get to it myself easily. i had an extra battery from my other car and used that and it did the same thing so altenator might be the problem. my next thought was the starter soilenoid possibly. thanks for the help

Since the starter is very accessable and "easy" to remove youcould take it to Auto Zone, Oreilley, etc and they may be ableto test it for you. Call first. Alternatively you could try to test it with a multimeter. Chiltons may have some good diagrams for thisas well as the shop manual.

Sounds like you have ruled out a bad battery but I dont see how itcould be the alternator (thats more difficult to change) unless you usedthe battery from the other car in your car for a while.

well i had a friend of mine that is a mechanic come over and look at it and says he is almost positive that is a leaking injector. so i guess i will start by trying to find which one it is.
