Maxima shutting off

2 days ago all of the sudden while drinking my car will shut off. What's even more strange is that when I restart and put in drive the car doesn't want to move. You almost have to floor it (the engine doesn't rev high) and it just takes it's time to accelerate. It's almost like starting in a manual transmission in a higher gear with no jumping. I tried sliding it into manual shift and the display moved from 'D' to '5'. Car will run normal after cooling off and repeat the same thing over again but with no specific time period. Any takers on this? ???
