Is it possible to remove a module and still maintain normal operation of the other modules?

I do automated programming for a living and we use CAN Bus to communicate with device networks the same way a car does.

I've got the service manual for th 07 maxima and i've been wanting to adapt the intellikey system to my Z for a while now. I've called several Nissan service techs who do not know the answer.

All of the other modules can be adapted rather easily to normal functions of the car.(minus climate control, but Z's already had an intelligent climate control so there's no need to use that feature).

The reason i ask is because in my field if a device is removed from a DeviceNet network (CAN Bus) the network continues as if there was never a problem. It will give errors if its searching for the removed device, however nothing that would prevent normal operation of other equipment.

So if one removes the ECM, will the Intellikey, power distribution, BCM work normally? I understand that features such as: A/C compressor control wont work because the BCM communicates to the ECM for that feature. Or if the ECM is removed will all of the modules fail to work because one is missing?

This is the only road block left for the adaptation.

I am going out on a limb here and saying that nobody has probably broached the subject before... You are trying to adapt this to your Z, has anyone in that forum done so yet? If not, take plenty of notes when you do it so that you can be the authority and charge others for your expertise...--Mike

I like the sarcasm...

Was i asking if someone has retro fitted it? No. I was asking a question regarding how electronics work in a car that people own. A simple, "I've removed my ECU before and the locking system still works".

As for taking notes, i intend to document everything...however what i do not intend to do is purchase all of these parts riding on a hope that they'll work w/o the ECU. Afterall, that is why i posted this in the first place.

Don't take it as total sarcasm, I'm not sure that was the point--really hard to read someone's tone over the internet. I think he was trying to say he wasn't completely sure, but he didn't think anyone else had much firsthand experience here.

I know we have some guys around here who know their nissan computer systems (techs and dealer guys as well as audio/electronics guys who have experience with the security systems). Just need to get their eyes on your project.

Try posting this in the Engineering and/or Audio/Security forums. A good idea might be to make new threads with links back to this one in those forums. Normally we frown upon duplicate threads across the board, but I think in this case it won't be hurting anything.

That is an interesting question you have. I'm not exactly sure how all of that stuff works to be honest. I think you biggest thing is going to be finding where the key is registered. If it's in the ecu as it was in the older cars you may have an issue. I'll have to look at the electrical diagram when i'm not quite so tired and see if there is anything else that I can think of.

As far as working independently of each other I would hope that the programers would do that so it wouldn't go into a failure mode where the whole car is disabled, but that might just be wishful thinking with nissan.

The key is registered in the Intellikey system. When i was looking in the Service Manual, it describes some of the tasks that each module will speak to another one for. As for modules working independent of each other, my first assumption is that as well... however, like you stated, it is nissan...

I've been working out all the details for ~8 months now. It all started when i got an 07 maxima rental last september.

This really is the last question to be answered before i start buying the components and modules to control it.

going on another month of research and still no result. I've called multiple dealerships and with no luck. Either they dont want to tell me or they dont know.

Perhaps maybe someone might remove their ECU and see if the doors lock/unlock as you approach them, ignition unlocks..ect ect?
