I have a 2000 Maxima SE with the automatic air-conditioning/heater system.

The auto air has always worked well, sending warm air thru the bottom vents (by the feet), and cold-air thru the middle vents (by the console/radio). In the winter I could set it at 68 degrees and forget about it, and it would always warm up the car just fine. In the summer, I would set it to 75 degrees and it would keep the car perfectly cool.

Suddenly, the system started acting really weird, and I can't figure out the problem. While cold air would never come out of the bottom vents in auto-mode before, now cold air comes out of the bottom vents, unless I crank up the temperature to over 82 degrees. If I set it any lower, it goes from warm air to cold air very quickly.

Has anyone else run into this ? I would really appreciate any ideas.

Sounds like the vane that directs the airflow may not be moving appropriately. Then again, I may be way off base.

If nobody has any additional thoughts on this then the thread should be moved to Online Mechanic for assistance.

Blend door and heater core immediately come to mind.
