I am looking to buy a 2009 Maxima SV for my son and daughter. The CVT makes me worry and the Nissan Dealer does not sell a warrantee for a car over ten years old.

Any advice? Should I buy the car or run away from it?

Lastly if you have to replace the trans how much should I expect to pay?

Thank you for your help.

Chuck

a replacement cvt could run anywhere between 4k-7k parts and labor

These are not cheap transmissions to fix..
But i know a lot of guys with Nissan CVT cars in perosn and none ever had a problem.
I owned 2 myself a 2k9 Maxima and a '14 Altima and no complaints... both cars were fantastic... ( however I did not keep both cars long due to changing interest and they were low miles while I owned them)
There is no denying that some CVTs break earlier than other trannies.. kinda like Dodge/Chrysler used to be (and maybe still is not sure.)
But conversations on the internet are self selected for problems (after all most non-car guys dont register and post unless they have an issue)

On the other hand i personally know of ppl running CVTs for near 200k (and one dude i met with a Versa for 450k)
