It seems to require $90>$100>$120 per extra HP NA - of course there are ultimate limits . The first 10 or 20 can be done for <$2,000, then each one after that gets progressively more expensive.
The question is reliability creating an engine that will last 300,000 miles and make more power get harder and harder.
At some point after spending $8,000 it would have been easier and cheaper to have just gone to supercharging.
The problem is many thing you do to increase a NA engine may not be as helpful to supercharging later so some might need to be scraped.
