I believe the largest that you can safely do is a .5l overbore. That would give you 3.8L.

I was looking into this at one point but I put the idea on hold cause it's a lot of $ for some of the parts I want. (VG38DET = Broke afterwards)

Do you know what that equates to in size per cylinder, ie 94.5 mm or 96mm

thanks

Stock bore is 91.5 mm, stroke is 83 mm.

I'm not 100% sure about when it's a .5L over bore. I haven't slept much so I'm not up on my mathematics.

99 mm is said to be the limit. I probably wouldn't go quite that big myself going with boost but regardless I'd have the walls tested to make sure you can go that big if that's what you're wanting to do.

Thanks Mtcookson,

I was not thinking of going that big. I am thinking of going to 96 or 97mm with a stroke of 89 mm. This should get me close to 4 liters. With a na compression ratio of 10.2. I am hoping for 250 rwhp and 230 rwtrq. Do you have any suggestions. THis engine is going into a 4wd frontier for street and trail use.

The stroke part is going to be difficult or at least very expensive. No one makes any stroker kits for these engines that I've seen yet so you may be stuck with just doing the bore. There is a VG30DETT stroker kit and it goes up to 87 mm stroke so 89 might even be pushing it.

Boring it that large with a high compression setup and good head work you actually should still be able to come very close to, if not meet your goals. I believe the 3.4 liter setup with the Q45 pistons was hitting 250 with mild head work/cams, and a relatively low compression ratio for an NA setup (under 10:1). If you're in the area of 3.6 to 3.7 liters and have a high compression ratio I could see that thing making some good power. 250 hp to the wheels might be a bit difficult, especially with 4WD but it will definitely be quite a bit more powerful with that setup.

Hi mtcookson,PAECO in Alabama says they can produce a stroker kit with pistons for 2000 usd. I spoke to them and based on there experience with the VG30 they believe they can get a 6mm stroke. Possibly it may turn out less. I want the stroke for more low end torque if I can get it if not, so be it.

Yeah, I've seen that Paeco listed they can do it. I've never heard of anyone getting one before so don't know of the quality. If its a good piece that price isn't too bad for a custom one and would definitely get the job done... just depends if you want to spend that much for a crank.

As far as the torque goes increasing the stroke can definitely help but with a big bore and proper cams you can still make a ton of low end torque. The cams will be a very important part as they really shape your power band. If you contact a company like Isky they can put together a grind for you that can help reach your power goals.

Yes 2000.00 dollars is a lot of money. But that includes rods and pistons. Of course no one has done this, so quality is an unknown. I guess some one has to be first.

Wow... including rods and pistons that's definitely not a bad deal. If they can make a decent piece I'd say go for it, it would definitely make the VG an NA monster with that kind of displacement.
