If he's a '67 Chevelle kind of guy, try this:
"I'd like a Chevelle, but good ones are expensive, and I'm just learning to drive. I'd hate to have a rare car and screw it up. Plus, gas is $1.50 a gallon, and a 396 (iirc?) V-8 is going to want a lot of it. It's also a 35 year old car that we'll need to maintain.
"A 240 would give me experience behind the wheel of a RWD car, at a lower cost per mile for fuel and maintenance. It's old enough that a home mechanic can work on the engine, but not so old that we'll have reliability problems. Plus, it's not particularly rare or valuable, so if I make a driving mistake and screw it up it's not a huge deal.
"In a year or so, when gas is cheaper and I have more experience, I can sell it and look for a nice Chevelle."
Wording that as a 17 year old is left as an exercise to a reader.
This argument appeals to three Mechanic Dad basics: - "Working on a car is great. Being forced to work on a car sucks." - "You need how much for gas money?!?" - "The boy doesn't know how to drive."
Just my $0.02.
I completely agree. You might also mention the cost of insurance for a 17yo - a 240SX (especially an S13) would probably run hundreds less per month than a Chevelle, especially an SS or 396.
I picked up my almost pristine 92 S13 for $2500 cash - 67,000mi from the original owner with all records.
My insurance is 163/mo liability only (the 167 in a 55 might have had something to do with that).
