Hey, my mate has a supercharged CA18DET in a Datsun 1200 coupe....the last time we drove it...it was fine ( and VERY fast ).but we took it out the other night, and it would go fine in first and second....but a second after you hit 3rd, it starts stumbling around....

The only mods he's done to it since the previous time are : fitted an intercooler and plumbed back the BOV.It has a mines ECU, which was putting out codes 12 and 34 ( air flow and knock sensor )...which we had unplugged both earlier then plugged in agin before we pulled the codes.....so may have just been that.

It's standard otherwise....standard ECU ( mines ), injectors e.t.c.. and custom extractors.the boost gauge is reading a max of 10psi.....but when you turn it off, the needle drops a couple points below 0....so may be running 12psi.

Is it possible that the MAF is maxing out? ( hence runs good untill it gets a fair amount of load )....

He's wanting to fit a Z32 MAF....but has very little room ( because of the S/C ). Is it possible to either take the sensor out of it's casing and put it straight into his intake pipe?.......or relocate it and put it just before the throttle body? ( are they happy running boost through them? )

any ideas would be awesome cheers guys.

Would "Mines" actually offer an ECU that wasn't tuned for a Z MAF? Every aftermarket CA ECU I've ever seen was tuned for AT LEAST Z32 MAF/440CC. Where did you get the ECU and how confident are you in what it was programmed for?

thats not true at all... most stage 1 and stage 2 chips are designed to utilize factory maf and injectors and play with timing and fuel curves. check out http://www.h-dev.co.uk/ and his chips. The only chip with z32 maf and bigger injectors are stage 3 and custom made ones.

What I meant was "JDM ebay/classified forums" CA ECUS, not the UK eprom chips.

I still say your ECU isnt tuned for the MAF you are using.

the ECU came with the motor when he bought it.....so other than assuming, we have no idea. we do not want to pull apart the mines ECU. he wants to sell it and buy a factory one.the thing is, that it was running really well untill he added the intercooler and plumbed back the BOV.

will tell him to try turning back the timing

I'll say quite confidently that it is.

He said it drove fine, then they installed an intercooler and bov. Check for codes again...maybe unplug the battery for awhile and try again. But I can unplug sensors, start it, plug them back in and everything is fine.

Check for boost leaks as well, as that'll richen it up on boost.

I'll bet with the new intercooler you're maxing out the MAFS. Because the air isn't heated now, it is going to take a much larger quantity of air to read the same boost. The larger mass of air is probabally maxing the sensor out.
