Hi all,

Heading out August 10th for a 2 week road trip in my 1996 Q45t, from Regina Sask, Canada to Lancaster PA return. M y wife's cousin is getting married and thought we would make a trip out of it. Its gonna be a 4000 mile trip.

The Q is up to snuff, new fuel pump, new tires, everything works fine, and I have no big concerns, the car has 210,000KM on it (~120k miles)

If something does take a dump though, any reccomendations on some decent shops along the way that I could limp it to and get it sorted out right?

Our general route will be going throgh Fargo ND, Minneapolis, Cedar Rapids Iowa, Peoria Illinios, close to Inianapolis, Columbus OH.

Any other reccomendations for a road trip in the Q? I am looking forward to it. I love driving the car.

Oh, also wondering, we dont have ethanol in our premium grade gas up here, so I havent had any problems. I understand it is everywhere in the states, but any brands that are better than others in this regard?

The 450 gallons of ethanol is dumped into the tanker truck before the branding secret sauce [additive drops to a cupful] is added to 4500 gallons of generic gasoline. It is slosh blended in the ride from tank farm to gasoline station.

Use a bottle of ISO HEET everytime you fill with ethanolized fuel.

Start with a new fuel filter and change when you return.

I'm 50 minutes from Lancaster. If you have time for more driving I'll buy you lunch at the best Chinese eatery in the tri-state area. Plus I'll let my 96 sniff yours... mine is such a sex fiend.

If you're gonna be rolling somewhere around either Indy or northern indiana, hit me up! At the very least I'd be happy to give the car a once over and talk Q for a few mins!

If you're taking the indiana toll road, i'll be less than 10 mins off that road.

Wes, watz a once over? Is that like... I'll take it to 80 mph on off chamber twisties and see if the sway bars are rusty or... is that like.. I'll forget its an auto and shift 1 to 2nd at 6000 rmp with a pause ? Or I'll take it to 120 and see how fast it stops...hahahah...you would kill his poor little 96 within 5 miles.

I dont know WHAT you're trying to say Peter! But my Q has suffered no (ahem) spirited driving related issues... And my Q has been violated over the years enough for about 10 cars...

theres a reason that these cars are still on the road and still kicking, and its not because a bunch of people are lucky (well some)..

Non-Ethanol Fuel in Minnesota... Only at select gas stations.

The hot rodders here have a list of stations that carry Non Ethanol Fuel. Usually, only one of the gas stations pumps is Non Eth. Look for sign on pump: Clasic Premium or 3"x 5" sticker Non-Ethanol. Sticker will warn: ONLY for classic cars, boats etc. In MN classic car is 20 years old. Don't worry about warning.

Google: non ethanol fuel mnThird link down should be http://www.msra.com. MN Street Rod Assoc. This is their list of stations in MN.

I read some posts, I think by Q45Tech?? That the injector failures went through the roof, when ethanol was introduced to fuel.

No suggestions for a Q repair shop around MN, haven't needed to find one YET.

Good luck on your trip!

Thanks for the tips guys. Much appreciated. I think it will be a fun trip. Im definitely looking forward to being back in the US, although our border gaurds are pretty sleepy compared to yours.

I very much enjoy the car. I told my wife the other day, when it eventually dies, I cant think of a car to replace it. Well I can, but not for under $25K. It is a classic.

Peter and Wes, thanks for the offers of meeting up. I am not sure what the schedule will be like, other than a crapload of driving. Peter, if I have a chance once we are in the area, I'll hit you an email and see if you have a minute.

Wes, I should be able to judge the amount of time it will take on the way back once I get there, and maybe can set something up on the return trip.

Either way, thanks for the offers, its great to know the community extends beyond the forums.

Im guessing ISO HEET is Methel Hydrate (sp?) not sure if it is sold by that brand in Canada, and will probably stock up before heading out. Im getting about 400 miles to the tank on a pretty flat highway at 80m/h so thats probably at least 15 tanks with all the running around. blah blah blah.

Thanks again.

Adam

Keith's shop is outrageously out of his way bro. I doubt he would even make it into Jersey as it doesn't really seem to be on the itinerary.

Thanks Guys.

Just got back. 9000KMs and she ran like a champ. 12 hour days of driving felt great. I used the ISO HEET and no issues I have noticed so far. Used no oil and got 400 miles per tank minimum.

Such an awsome car for a road trip. Lots of room, great ride. Nothing like having the juice for a quiet cruise at 80mph and then stomping it to pass with ease.

Just thought I would give an update.

ps. I guess I have two profiles, one from when I had the 91 q. I'll sort that out.
