As of right now, the death toll is 27, most of them children (depends on which news story you follow). The story is new and police are still trying to assess the situation but I have to wonder, how the hell did this happen and how in the hell does this KEEP happening? This is worst school massacre since the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007. Who the hell opens fire on a bunch of K-4th graders????

I think he shot his dad at home, went to school to shoot his mother (She's a teacher there), then shot up her classroom.
Makes me f*** sick.

There is no way hell is harsh enough to make him suffer enough for this. As a mother, I can not imagine the anguish these parents are feeling, not knowing if their child was one of the victims or one of the survivors.

This guy was twisted. He had to have had a bigger agenda. if it was just his mother he was after, why go to the school and why carry four guns and wear a bullet proof vest??

WHY the hell would someone go to a school and kill a bunch of kids??? KIDS???????? Unbelievable that the killer is that messed up.

I'm not a parent but I have a sister (16) and I have some baby cousins around that age and holy s*** if that would happen in my area - I can't imagine what I would do.

Imagine how big this issue actually is... Not only everyone dead but everything that comes with it...

Just down right disgusting.

I Heard it on NPR, this is crazy, my heart goes out to all to CT and everyone involved. Nothing like this should happen.

I have heard gun control talk going on ( live in VA we love our guns) and no matter how much control you have you can't predict or stop crazy. I am interested to hear any explanation of motive or if this kid is just nuts.

I don't even know what to say on this one except I feel so bad for these poor families, I have a 6 year old, I just can't imagine. Not many things disturb me at all, this one has really had me bothered all day. This has caused me to re-think my stand on some things.

There is not a ring of hell painful enough for this waste of flesh. I don't want to hear about the "mental issues" which has already been on TV, this "thing" was just plain evil.

People always try to look for motive in things like this. I think Chris Rock captured it best when talking about Columbine, "whatever happened to crazy?"

I don't think a reasonable human being can fully understand why sick people do what they do. You have to be sick to understand. The fact that you can't understand should make you happy.

In the weeks to come, these two most recent tragedies will be used to maximum effect for all sorts of various political agendas and while I have my agendas and am getting ready for that fight I think right now we should just focus on the victim's families.

Well said.

I think what disgusts me even more than the senseless deaths of children is the fact that there's never a shortage of people eager to use the suffering of others to support their agendas. My fellow humans disgust me in more ways than I can possibly describe.

This news is terrible. What any of us think of why or how is not relevant.

This massacre was nicely timed. Should boost Xmas sales. My heart goes out to the families affected. I just think parents are going to spoil their kids a little bit more this Xmas just for being alive. I know, I'm sick.

im about 20mins from Newtown, went to abbott tech and have friends from Newtown. didn't think something like this would happen so close to home. especially in Newtown. i wonder whats gonna happen with the kids that go to that school. I'm sure the last place they want to be is in a building full of nightmares.

I'm curious to how this guy got into the school with an assault rifle. how do you hide that?

He probably just walked in. There normally aren't armed security guards stationed every entrance of a suburban elementary school. Very sad story.

i read something earlier today about how these planned suicides are carried out through these large massacres as an attempt to be remembered. its working. the media focuses on the killers more than the killed. Name one victim from VT shooting? or columbine? but the names of the killers are very well known and the massacres are historical events now... a loner kid that withdrew himself from family likely depressed or even beyond, ignored and outcast from society like most peculiar kids. he wants out of life, see's how people are becoming famous from killing before taking their own life. what would top them all? killing kids. very young and some disabled/special children and right before Christmas... it worked and he is famous... i wanna blame the media when looked at from this standpoint. cover the story of the killed not the killer.

Just confirmed some disturbing news...

When they released a photo of Adam Lanza from 2008 I had a strange feeling that recognized him. I remembered a similar individual from a summer class at my University in 2008. It turns out he was that individual. I sat next to Adam Lanza for 6 weeks in the summer of 2008 while we learned Visual Basic in a computer lab.

His demeanor and behavior was odd enough that I didn't forget him. I just didn't put a face to a name until now. He was an awkward individual who was clearly having trouble.

Correct. On the news, it said the outer doors to the school had been locked just minutes earlier. Obviously the school's windows/doors were not designed to repel a determined armed mass murderer. Then again, how many small town, suburban elementary schools do you know are set up to do that?

Doesn't matter if the school is in suburbs or not, you can walk into almost all schools. Breaking a glass door is rather easy
