Here's the instructions for cleaning from the Q45.org site:

http://www.q45.org/maf.html

Symptoms of a misbehaving MAF on a Q45 are typically bucking/jerking, erratic idle and occasional stalling coming to a stop.

I'm having similar problems with my '92. Very hard to start this a.m.After warmup I took it out and the revs wouldn't go over 3k. You could hold the accelerator to the floor and once it would reach 3k, it would hit a limiter. There was a noticable gas smell when I got home too.

Engine check light came on too.

Any ideas?

check the codes... probably MAF or CAS related.

Sounds like failure mode. How old is fuel pump and filter? MAF connection good?

I'm leaning towards the MAF. Fuel filter is brand new from Joe.

I'm guessing fuel pump is original ('92). No hum from pump though.

Anyone around central IL with OBD I / Infiniti knowledge?

Budget for it and the O-ring gasket. Probably toast. Not all failures are noisey. Measure fuel pressure as detailed in posts by Q45tech.

Plan on inspecting tank for corrosion and debris, and removing it to steam clean if not pristine (abolutely nothing in tank, not even a film). Best to replace all rubber in your fuel system while you are at it, and blow out metal lines. Then you are good for another 14 years.

You mean my NICO ECU that I just installed on Monday? (wink wink)

Yea, I'll check it out. I'll keep you posted. I'm going to check the connection to the MAF first. I shot the connection w/ CRC this summer, so it should be clean....

I'll unplug the ECU and check the connection. I don't think it's the connection to the ECU however, since I drove it on Monday and took a quick run down the interstate to Springfield.

I did some 100-120 mph squirts with no problems reving to 7k....

It's the nature of the beast - install one new part and fix 3 more....

Pulled the ECU and looked at the connection - no problems here.

Ran to AutoZone and picked up a can of CRC electrical cleaner and a can of dielectric grease (I don't know why I didn't do this before...)

Pulled the connector to the MAF, blasted it and used my wife's toothbrush to clean the terminals. Greased it and connected it back together. While I was under the hood I pulled every connector I could find and did the clean / grease process. I also unscrewed and cleaned all of the grounds I could find.

Turned the key and everything seems to be back to normal. No check engine light.

Ran it out on the county road and it did fine. Stopped at Walgreens on the way back and picked up a new toothbrush for the missus.

I'm crossing my fingers and knocking on wood right now.

New parts frequentlywill highlight old parts that need replacing.

Beware, traffic is 10% slower with NICO ECU!
