According to a diagnosis I have received, my 97 Nissan 4x4 p/u with the 2.4 5 sp has a bad MAFS. Where is this located ? Can the sensor be cleaned. Can the vehicle be operated with said sensor disabled?

Thanks..

it is attached to the side of the throttle body. remove the aircleaner top and bottom portions. the bottom portion has a 10 mm bolt holding it down in the rear. once you get the top cover off you will see it. underneath it is a sensor toward the passenger side,be sure you unplug this before you lift the aircleaner bottom up the wires on it tend to break easily. there is also a vaccum line you need to pull off that is under neath on the passenger side near the rear. and finally the PCV fresh air line on the drivers side near the rear. lift it off and on the drivers side of the throttle bode there is a black box. that is your air flow meter. check the harness going to it. I have seen those break the ground wire right at the connector and will through an airflow meter code. No the car will run alot worse with it disconnected

thanks for the welcome and the advice. I will check it out tomorrow and hopefully can rectify the problem before the snows come tomorrow night. The local dealer quoted me over 900.00 for a replacement unit. When I told this to my wife, she flipped.Again, many thanks! Dave

thats because you can only buy it with the throttle body. It does not come seperatly even though you can unbolt it.

Your welcome and good luck.

there are 2 black boxes....one on the passenger side, one more towards the front. One has 1 plug and the other has 2. Would the Airflow unir be the one towards the front. There is a round type sensor on the drivers side. Thanks, Dave

the one with one connector is your airflow meter.

the other is your throttle position sensor.

the edge of the airflow meter should be just about flush with the top of the throttle body. looking down on the throttle body right next to the sensor, in the top of the throttle body, there should be a hole about 3/8 inch in diameter. this is your air flow meter sensor inlet.

I pulled the sensor out. What should I be reading across the terminals and the 'inside elements' whith an ohm meter. I measure 20 ohms between the brigded terminals with what looks like a small value resistor on both.

Well I didnt know you were planning on testing it. testing of the airflow meter requires it to be installed and the engine running. with it plugged in you have to back probe the connector and check its voltage at idle and how hig it goes when you snap the throttle wide open.[do not hold it at wide open] you measure the voltage off of the wires one will be battery voltage another will be 0 volts[ground] and the other will be you signal input to the ecm. should be somewhere near 1.3 to 1.5 volts at idle and exceed 4 v on snap throttle.

Okay, I will check for those voltages, probably tomorrow as the sun has set and it is now 8 degrees out....cold.Thanks...Dave
