I got a Nuvi for my birthday and laughed when I saw the commercial. Obviously I know where they got the idea for what to get me. I mounted mine with the suction cup to the windshield and thought it was to far away for using. The best place to put it on the Rogue is the exact same spot shown in the picture. I don't want anything stuck, or drilled into my dash so I went out and bought a Garmin friction mount at Best Buy. It's basically a heavy pad with a mount attached to it. You can do a search for it to see a picture if my description doesn't make sense. Anyway, it's not the most attractive thing, but it does work amazingly well. I thought one sharp turn, hitting the brakes, or stepping on the gas, the thing would slide off the dash but it doesn't. Trust me I tried. What I really like about it is I can put it wherever I want on my dash without damaging the dash itself. It fits good on both the left side and right side of the steering wheel and also is great to put on the passenger side if someone is riding with you. Also, the nuvi easily detaches from the mount so you can bring it with you. The thought of a empty mount on my dash or windshield made me nervous that it may entice a thief to try and break in. This is another reason I like the friction mount because it can easily be placed inside the center console or the enormous glove box we have once you get to your destination.
I thought a traditional in dash gps system would be better, but the nuvi is great alternative which now I am thinking is perhaps even better to own instead. It has a lot of advantages because it is portable. It has a setting to change from a driving gps to a pedestrian gps which is kind of cool if you a parking in a city you are not familiar with and will be walking around. It has a built in mp3 player, you can hook it up to your computer and get updates easily. Perhaps in the future they could build a docking station into the dash one day we can have the best of both worlds. It would look like a traditional gps but with the push of a button it pops out and its now portable.
