I'm having problems with the manual transmission in my 01 Maxima. I have an intermittent problem where I can't slot 1st gear. When this happens, I usually can't slot 3rd either. 2nd, 4th, 5th, and reverse go in fine when this happens. Is it the synchros? I was hoping it was just the shift linkage binding up for some reason (feels like something is obstructing or in the way that prevents it from going into 1st or 3rd). If I jiggle it around and keep at it I can always get it to go into gear, but obviously this is a problem. Any advice is appreciated. If it's the synchronizers, I'm thinking I'll try to source a JDM transmission and just swap it out rather than try to rebuild it.

How is the level and condition of the ATF? If fluid is dirty, flush it or do multiple train and refil. You can also try adding Lube Guard Red (not black) ATF Protectant. Do you have any trouble code like P0720?

Ooppss. Sorry... I missed the 'manual' part. It could be the Shift Control Rod. Refer to the Diagnostic Chart in the link below, starting on MT-6

Cool, thanks for the link...the FSM is a great resource. I'll go through the diagnostics and see what I can figure out. I may take it to a transmission shop to get their opinion/estimate too.
