Manual Transmission Inspection

Hi there,

I am looking to buy a manual transmission for my 240sx Convertible and I was wondering if there are any ways that I can check the transmission for grinds and mechanical condition with out having to put it on my car and driving it or with out having to take the sellers word for it?

Here I would say a real mechanics opinion is worth a lot. I would take it to a good trans shop and let them look at it. But, if nothing else shift it through all gears and rotate the input shaft in each gear. Listen and feel for grinding or other bad noises.
