It's weird. Breaker bar works most of the time. If it doesn't work, add a pipe(cheater bar) to the break bar and try. Make sure to spray some PB Blaster and heat it up if needed. Also make sure to remove the filler plug first. If you remove drain plug, and can't remove filler plug, that won't be pretty. If you somehow strip the rectangle hole, you can weld a small wrench extension there, so don't worry about it. When you install the plug, put some anti-sieze. That helps later. Torque spec for the plugs is 18-25lb.

I've got a little "open-diff side project" going on at the moment. I could not, for the life of me get the drain plug out of the one differential - even with the impact gun on the highest setting with 100psi... Just turned the square hole into an octagon... Even with PB blaster. I didn't feel like messing with the torch so I said "screw it" and drained it from the filler hole.

Impact gun is not always good since it can strip the square hole. PB Blaster, Torch, Breaker and Cheater Bars should do the trick. Try this before you go. Breaker bar+floor jack handle instered to make it longer. If this doesn't work, no one can remove it!!

Congrats!!!Yup!! PB Blaster, torch, breaker/cheater bar and some elbow grease work most of the time. I forgot to tell you this... Someone said Lucas oil stabilizer makes transmission feel like new. I'll try it next time.

i know this is an old thread but i really need help. i have a 1990 300zx and i cant get the gear oil plug out of the transmission. is there another way to fill the transmission via the bottom plug or at the shifter? i need help quick cause i have to drive my car. i tried a breaker bar, pb blaster, torch and all i did was round out the square hole in the plug. it looks as if the dumbace who had the car before me put locktight or silicone on the treads. what do i do now?

You can weld a bolt to the drain plug and try to remove it and yes, you can fill it from shifter hole, but you have to pour exact amount of transmission fluid. You want to do it right, so I say weld a bolt on the plug.

the way we did mine when the drain plug was stuck was we drained it from the driveshaft. took a little longer but we got it done. oh and not all the old fluid came out so we just filled it with new fluid and waited a bit for the old fluid to rise up and out the fill plug...or something like that
