Working on dropping the 5 speed manual transmission drop on my 300zx, I took off the support bracket from the assembly, exhaust tubes, however do I need to take off what looks like the heat shield in order to get the control rod off from the shift lever?? I'm trying to get my EGR valve off as it is extremely clogged and I've heard that you can either drop your transmission or remove ur engine.. I dont' have a lift to take my engine out so I'm in the process of dropping my transmission..

it's easier to get the engine out if you pull the trans first unles you have a lift and a cradle to drop the whole drivetrain and ifs together

to pull the trans;
remove the exhaust or at least the center section if you ahve aftermarket exhasut that can be unbolted
the heatshield over the cars has to come out
pull the bolt holding the shifter to the trans
pull the driveshaft
unbotl the slave cylinder from the trans
disconnect the wiring
unbotl the trans fomr the negine (lots fo fun)
then you can pull the trans out

Evil how do I pull out the driveshaft? Do I unbolt the driveshaft since it's not a single piece? Or does it slide right out?

Unbolt at the diff end, unbolt the center bearing and it slides out of the transmission. That end has a spline on it. It may drip out trany fluid, depends what angle your transmissions at

oh yeah, you gotta take out the starter as well (be sure you disconnect the nigetive fomr the battery first

the driveshaft end taht goes intot he trans slides out (you'll want to draint he trans or keep it tilted forward to avoid spilling the trans fluid)

at the otehr end you cna unbolt it at the carrier bearing or remove the carier bearing and unbolt it at the diff
