not really a problem per se, but do any of you guys with the 6mt have a problem putting in first gear? it happens pretty rarely but when it does its pretty annoying. i'm standing at a red light, turns green, and i can't shift into first, i have to wiggle it around shift to second then back to first for the gear to actually go in.

any help?

Tight gate perhaps? Maybe it will loosen up with time.

I had this happen once, but then it just went away. like Reverend D said maybe you need to wait for your gate to possibly loosen up

I'm pretty sure Illuminated Kick Plates will cure that problem!

On the other hand, it's extremely common for the synchros to line up wrong when you come to a stop. Try putting it in 1st gear as you roll to a stop next time..does it still happen?

If not, you might wanna check your clutch system: Maybe bleed? check fluid level? check linkage adjustment?

Drain and refill gearbox? What weight oil is in there? Redline makes some Excellent gear oil which might solve this.

thing is, it's not often that it happens so i'm just probably gonna live with it, although switching gear oil might not be a bad idea (along with the illuminated kick plates)

thanks guys!

I'm not touching this one

To the OP, from what you can recall, are you downshifting before coming to a stop when this happens? This happens to me sometimes, you just let go of the clutch all the way and then engage it again and it should go in gear.

no. this is how it happens: i'm cruisin down a street, in 3rd or 4th, come to a stop, so i put it in neutral, clutch disengaged. couple moments later i push the clutch in and i try to put it in 1st to get ready for the green light and the gear won't go in.

Seriously guys, I have the 6MT so trust me on this one. GET A HEAVIER KNOB. the stock on is FREAKING LIGHT. you'll shift into ANY gears better. I really don't know what the Nissan engineers were thinking when they came up with that lame OEM shift knob. After you are done with the knob, CHANGE YOUR MTF!

those two things will COMPLETELY change the way you drive.

The Razo ra96 shift knob is compatible with our reverselockout shifter and costs 40$ with free shipping from amazon.com

And one quart of REDLINE MTL or MT-90 is 10$ from redlineoil.com

I had the same problem initally. Dealer told me to "clear it" through second gear first, and that would provide better bearing alignment to then go into first. I got into a habit of doing that and it works fine.

After 10,000 miles I am now used to the transmission and it works fine. But early on stuff like this was driving me a bit nuts (also the notchy shifting, which the service tech referred to as "yea, it has a real positive feel." I figured, damn dude, you should be a salesman, not a mechanic). Now I am used to it and have no regrets whatsoever for getting the 6MT. Never thought I'd say it about this transmission, but I now love it and it works great...even smooth and consistent third gear scratches when I wanna push it....which isnt often, but enough to feed the urge.

I also put Redline synthetic into the transmission (mixed). It didnt seem to make a difference initially, but now the transmission works great and theres no irritating issues left. Im not sure if they have gone away, or if I have just adjusted to the "work arounds" and gotten used to it.
