For the past 2 weeks or so, transmission fluid has been leaking out of my transmission, getting on the exhaust, and creating smoke whenever I rev the car decently high. Today I'm looking at it and it seems to be coming from where the shift linkage goes into the transmission. I took the shift linkage out and notice a couple of holes/tears in that pretty thick boot that surrounds the linkage where it goes into the transmission. Does this seem like that's what the problem is? The reason I ask is because it seems like when the linkage is on and in place, the boot is pretty sealed but I wasn't sure if at high revs (and maybe high pressure) the tears might open up and let the fluid out. The rest of the transmission is pretty dry except for the top and bottom surrounding the linkage and then there is fluid on the rest of the underbody from the linkage back. Please let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

The boot does nothing to keep oil in the transmission on a level surface, I dont even have one on my shifter. There is no shift linkage inbetween the shifter and the transmission as the shifter sits directily in the gearbox case. My guess is that either your rear main oil seal or the gasket underneith the shifter plate is bad/cracked.

So if I was going to replace either the gasket or the seal or both, do the ones from the 240sx manual transmission fit and work for the sr20det transmission? If not, what car should I get the parts from or where else should I go for them? Thanks.

The Gearbox's are identicle, its just the bell housings that are different. So yeah gaskets for a KA24de transmission will work just fine on there.
