When you are driving in manual mode on the CVT transmission, when are you supposed to shift? I have a 2009 2.5 coupe by the way...

whenever you want, it depends on whether you are trying to drive economical or speedily...

I hate how the RPM's stay so high even after you shift...so lame. But thats what you get for using a CVT

If you have a CVT, drive it like a CVT (just leave it in "D"). the ONLY time manual mode is good is if you're racing from a roll or if you have exhaust and want to hear it louder.... people have raced it at the track and its been proven that just leaving it in "D" is faster...

I highly disagree with that....

I just did a canyon run from Palomar mountain down to Julian... and I'll tell you, manual mode is a life saver when driving in the twisties... the purpose of manual mode is to control your RPM's when driving... when used properly in combination with braking, you get excellent control of the A/C.. not as much as a real manual but DEFINATELY better control than just leaving it in drive

I use manual mode all the time...especially when I'm slowing down The bonus is that I hear my sexy fast intentions exhaust when accelerating or downshifting

lol well ya, thats kind of what i meant.... racing from a roll, having the RPMs up and trying to go fast from a roll through some twisties. point is, if you're trying to go fast from a stop use "D", instead of trying to know when to shift. typically ppl dont ask when to shift if they're going through the twisties because you just shift when ever it feels right. people usually ask when to shift if they're trying to race in a straight line or if people are trying to go for max MPG.... max MPG, just leave it in "D", straight line performance= leave it in "D" unless your going from a roll.

In my 3.5, I generally shift around 2k to 2.25k RPMs. I've found that this means I'm in 6th gear at 40mph, 5th gear between 25 and 35mph, and 4th at 20mph. First, second and third gear might just as well be one for these purposes.

That's for being economical. I believe our HP peaks at 6.2k (correct me, someone, if I'm wrong) on the 3.5, and so you could always rev it to there (or to the 2.5's equivalent) to have some fast in your life.

Mostly, I use manual mode because I enjoy not using my brakes.

ahh yes, I see what you mean... that I agree with... i don't normally use manual mode when taking off... but definately at higher speeds to get better control of the car, in the twisties, and going downhill...
