manual downshift problem

so my qx4 has been acting strangely yesterday i put my transmission lever to 2nd gear it didnt show up on the dash board and same problem with 1st too but the thing is that even if i keep it in first the transmission would shift to second and stay their until i return it to D. what could the problems be??

It could be a selector switch or wiring issue, it could be the shift solenoid valve things inside the transmission and it could be the transmission control unit computer part. You should put the year of your car into the user profile bit so we don't have to ask each time. I think you can get OBD-II codes for your transmission woes and should check your car for those. Let us know if you have any specific codes. Additionally, use the FSM to diagnose your issues. Here's a link to the transmission chapter. Maybe you need the steps around page 250ish?
