i did a search but didn't find anything specific to what i want to ask, it's always just general info about mbc's and stuff...

any so my question is this: is there an mbc for lower boost apps? my wastegate is set around 5 psi, and i'd rather get a little mbc than buy another spring. i want to be boosting about 8 psi, because that's what seems to be the accepted maximum safe boost for an fmu setup on a ka. most of the mbc's i've seen start out at 10 psi, so i just want help finding one that starts at 7 psi... this is a low budget setup so $50 bucks would be a good price if that is posible. it seems to be about what mbc's in general go for, other than the dual stage stuff. thanks for the help.

I am running a TurboSX mbc and FMU with 10psi on a worn out 166k engine. You can use any MBC and it work. I personally like the one that has the check ball in it. It works consistantly and builds boost faster by keeping the wastegate closed longer. It is more expensive but it works!

But if you really want cheap you can go to the Aquarim store and by a valve there that will work for a couple of bucks.

haha. no i really didn't want to push my engine to 10 psi because it still makes perfect compression and will be good for a long time to come as long as i don't blow it up. i want to stick with 8 psi because that just seems to be the safest maximum number with my fmu setup (that's what everyone on this board says). so anyway do mbc's with spring rates less than 10 psi exist? i read some stuff about hallman's mbc's and they didn't say anything specific about where their mbc's start at (the lowest setting)... i am under the impression though that they have many different models that start at different lowest settings, but i don't know which one is the one for me... and they are in my price range also. i'm open to suggestions.

There is a guy in College Station, about 1.5 hours away from austin that makes really nice boost controllers. I have two, one is set at 13psi and another is set at 10psi. They go for 20 bucks. I can give you his info if you want to talk to him.

http://boostcontroller.com/index.php?category=4They have softer spring application that should work perfect for you.

when installing the MBC, note that the shorter the wastegate signal line is, the more less likely you will have boost spikes.

yeah... my line is pretty direct but it's still not something i would call short. it comes from the vacuum port right at the throttle body and goes in front of the engine over to the wastegate. maybe i should just run it from the hot side directly in front of the turbo straight to the wg. i might change that later. i'll see what my results with my current setup are and if i have problems then i'll reconsider how i plumbed my vacuum lines.

I hooked my mbc from the port that the internal wastegate used and then to the wastegate. It is very short line works well.

i have an external wastegate, so i didn't have the short vacuum port running from the internal gate to a port on the turbo... when i installed my turbo i redid all of the vacuum lines because i eliminated the carbon canister, the egr, and i wanted it to look cleaner and easier to get to if i had a problem... the regular vacuum lines that run behind the head are just a little hard to get to... really when i started working on this engine i just wanted to rip so many things off and make it look nicer and easier to work on... now that i've done this even my friend that hated this engine at first likes it.

anyhow so that's off topic a little...

like i said though i may add a little nipple right after the turbo so i can have a easy hook up to the wg... but i can't weld aluminum... we'll see how things go and if i need to do it then i guess i'll have someone weld on a bung.

does anyone else with an external wg run their wg line to the throttle body, or does everyone pretty much try to make it as short as possible?

I have an external wastegate. The turbo that I installed came with an internal wastegate that had a barb fitting on the turbo itself for internal wastegate. If you don`t have that then next best thing is to connect it to the hot pipe. You might be able to drill a hole and screw a npt fitting in it, and then use jb weld.

yeah. i'd rather weld it. i'm a perfectionist and i know people who can weld aluminum, so like i said maybe i'll be doing that if i run into problems... or maybe i'll just do it when i get around to it.
