Ive been a member here for a while, learning what i can. At the same time, i have been looking for a 240sx to buy. I'm not very knowledgeable (as in, no experience) about cars in general. After like 3 months of looking, there is a 1991 champagne coupe for sale one street over from me. Ive talked to the guy that owns it, and there are a few small problems. At the same time, he has modified it a good bit. My parents always ask that before buying a car, we have a mechanic check it out. Anyway, my main problem is this:
The guys coupe was originally automatic, but the previous owner converted it to 5 speed almost 2 years ago. The car now needs a starter. I talked to the mechanic today without having the car up there, and he said that because the car was converted to 5 speed, if the starter wasnt also changed to a manual transmission starter, then there may be flywheel problems. How true is this? I havent heard that before, and in the 5 speed swap article, it doesnt mention needing a starter...
Thanks!

That may be true with some other car (and i'm not aware of any) but for sure, not a problem with the 240sx. part number is the exact same, so truly, there is no auto or manual specific starter motors. If that's your main problem, what else is going on with it? Good luck regardless...

Well mostly small stuff. He go backed into, but not badly. So the lights don't go down, only the brights work.. Another "major" item is it needs a new wheel bearing. But the guy selling it is a great guy. Somebody put down money and is supposed to drive down to Atlanta from Wisconsin to pick it up this weekend (don't ask me why), but if that falls through the car should be mine. I actually introduced my parents to the car (they've never been in a modded car) and they liked it. Good sign....

Hey comatoseculture.. Make sure you enable pm's, I can't pm you back. Here is what I was gonna say though haha.
Modification wise- 3" HKS exhaust, 5 lug with ichiba in back, s14 in front. Q45 front brakes, lowered on skunk2 springs and kyb struts, Tein strut bars and tie rods, and a viper alarm system. Engine wise it's all stock, only transmission mod is that it's 5 speed not automatic. 141k mileage. I would have to replace the hood and bumper relatively soon, they don't sit flush. The car rides really well, and is really clean Otherwise though. Thanks for helping... And if you have any specific questiOns you hink I should ask him if it doesn't sell to the Wisconsin guy, let me know.
