For some reason, this story sparked a lot of controversy on Fark.com:

Quote »Man snubs $3051 meal for takeawayFrom correspondents in LondonDecember 16, 2004

IT was the social ticket of the year, a star-studded charity gala where the glitterati ate gourmet food prepared by Britain's top chef. But for one party-goer, the curry house across the road just looked more tempting.

Ivan Massow, a flamboyant arts administrator, was condemned as "childish" for snubbing his 1200-pound ($3051) a plate meal in favour of a takeaway because he could not wait for his food to arrive.

Massow was one of hundreds of guests who attended the glamorous Christmas party in central London held to benefit United Nations cultural organisation Unicef, the Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on Wednesday.

As well as entertainment from pop star Sting, the guests - paying 12,000 pounds ($30,510) for a table of 10 - were also promised a "gastronomic feast" by multi-award winning chef Gordon Ramsey, considered Britain's finest.

However Massow, who formerly headed Britain's Institute of Contemporary Arts, told the paper that after an hour-and-a-half of waiting for food - and a lot of champagne - desperate measures were needed.

Spotting the Rajasthan Restaurant across the road, he dashed in and bought seven main courses with rice and naan bread for 70 pounds ($178).

"We were not trying to cause trouble, or courting an audience, we were just hungry," Massow told the paper.

"It was just a practical measure," he said, explaining that the only embarrassment was people on neighbouring tables begging for food.

However a spokeswoman for Event Vision, the company that organised the party, was scathing.

"He was one of the freebies - a guest of someone who had bought his ticket - and he had the audacity to complain," she said.

"It is shocking. To got and order a curry just says more about the guest than anything else. It is really childish."

Agence France-Presse[/quote]Im surprised the company that organized it had the audacity to get upset with him.

I must praise him for refusing to wait. The charity organization got their donation from the purchased ticket, and ninety minutes is way too long to wait for a meal. Plus, how do you pass up curry when its right across the street? (My mom makes the best, period.)

Man I must be the only one that can't stand curry meals. I've tried soooo hard to adapt to it but I can't. I used to work with an all Indian staff (except mysell of course) and they'd offer me some of their food, andI just couldn't stand it. I felt bad in a way because I'd make this icky face whenI ate it but I really couldn't help it.

There is nothing that replaces Service.. Nothing. At all...

No matter how good a meal can be... nothing is worth waiting 90+mins for.... Especially since he probrably went there hungry to gorge on expensive food.

Poor guy probrably got there hungry and they expected him to wait??? Shhhiiiiieeeee

the plates where probrably all little pansie fufu plates of veggies, garnish and crap..... (no offense to Vikki, of course)

I'll be the voice of dissention. You don't go to a $3500 a plate dinner to eat, that's not the point.

Now (in agreement), for the chairty to get all pissy about him taking measuers into his own hands is weird. I don't see how any of what he did as a negative on them. Now if they had a cash bar and he went and got a few bottles from a liquor store, that would be different.

I think they were mostly mad because he highlighted a deficiency on the part of teh organizers.

I agree with Fred on this matter, but I also think that spending 3 grand on a plate of food is worth the wait. It was a cherity dinner, so the main point was not the food.

If my meal cost $3000, it better be on the table quick, fast, and in a hurry.

I don't need mine on a plate just on a set of titties. It will be funny if next year they have the curry place cater.
