I was visiting m-series-forum-fuga-forum.html as I regularly do, and I was automatically forwarded to http://200.c8ik.uquonvegaoo.org/5601144 ... c8763.html by a malicious advertisement. This particular link was clearly meant to scam Internet Explorer users out of money (where it failed against my customized security settings and othrewise would have failed against my killing IE with task manager), but the advertisement would likely use different links to scam users of other browsers as well. I don't have any more or better information to provide regarding which advertisement it was or where the advertisement came from, and I don't see any better place to post this, so I am leaving it here in hopes that someone can tell the right person who can then investigate.

Hey Dustin, Ilya from our section here.

Just a tip (from an IT person):

1) Stop using IE. In the IT world, we call it 'Internet Exploder'
2) Get Chrome (or Firefox) and install the AdBlock Plus plug-in to prevent such ads from ever loading. You can set it up to be easy on NICO (since we rely on the generated revenue a bit)

IT guy to IT guy, I understand your sentiment. I actually have FireFox and a Chrome variant each with ad blockers, and I use them when I must, but IMHO, IE is easiest to secure via configuration, and my IE configuration is more secure and also more private (from a cookie standpoint) than the default FireFox configuration. I'm running NoScript on FireFox as well, so it's technically even more secure still, but that doesn't change the cookie situation. I'll finish the switch to FireFox when I switch to Linux or Mac, which may be soon with the way MS is treating Win7.

It's not a matter of opinion, Chrome and FireFox are more secure, end of line.

I guess I can't complain about politics in a general discussion forum, but I will clarify my comment.

My opinion is that IE is easier to secure (beyond default).

I guarantee you that my IE configuration is more secure than the default configuration in Chrome or FireFox.

LMFAO! Soooo, since we're on the subject, what do the IT guys have to say about Edge on Win10? Once I found an ad-blocker (which I think is just a little program that modifies something in the registry) I'm really liking it and so far I have no issues with it. My Norton AV just updated for Win10, so I'm thinking support is getting better.

I have no intention of using Win10 personally, and hopefully won't be upgrading my corporate environment for some time yet, so I can't really give you any input there.

Windows 10 is a far cry better than Windows 8.1 Pro. In every single way. (Not terribly hard to accomplish)

I gotta get smarter on Windows 10 now because it looks like all my clients will be skipping Windows 8.1 from 7 and going straight to 10.

That's exactly what I did. I'm using it on my PC, and went straight from 7 to 10. I can't upgrade from 7 on my laptop because my version of QuickBooks doesn't play nice with any of the new OS's. So I'd have to upgrade my business program for $300 (which is working perfectly fine) just to upgrade my OS.

The amount of advertising, especially Flash and video ads, that are embedded on each page in this forum are melting my browser. I have a brand new laptop and I am running the latest version of Firefox and when I open more than one tab of NICO my browser slows to a crawl, affecting the rest of my computer. Right now I can count fifteen different banners on this create-post page, there are more on other pages.

I could run ad-blocker software but 1) revenue for this forum is generated by ads so that seems kinda wrong, and 2) it screws with the control panel for another website that I run.

Internet Brands, are you in here? Can you tone it down just a bit so I can actually enjoy the forum? Maybe less Flash and video? Thanks!

Here is my task manager with one tab of NICO open... over 31% of CPU and nearly A GIG of memory used!

Hi spinout180. I've merged your topic with a similar one (even though you're not having an issue with malicious stuff). Anyway, as noted above, we recommend using AdBlock Plus, it's free and can be disabled on individual pages or entire sites (don't worry about impacting ad revenue, we're cool with it).

An alternative option, spinout180, would be NoScript. I don't know for sure if it blocks flash, but if it does, then you might be able to provide some ad support without dealing with the performance issues you mention. It is a bit of a pain for some sites that use 3rd party scripts to function where you don't know which 3rd party scripts are necessary, but even if you allow things liberally on your favorite sites, you'll still be blocking more scripts than you are without it.
