Malfunctioning speed limiter

I have a 1990 sohc 240SX. This morning my speed limiter started cutting in at 3,800 rpm in 5th gear while normally it is 4,800 rpm. Has anyone experienced this problem? What can I do about it?

This morning the problem didn't appear. I was able to turn 4,300 rpm in 5th gear without any interference from the speed limiter. I think that intermittent electrical/sensor problems are the most aggravating.
