When buying a Q with separate climate control in the back seat I thought that it's for controlling temperature in the back (how naive). The control is actually changing the temperature (or fan speed) in all of the car, even for driver and even when dual (driver/passangers) temperature setting is enabled.

Having a kid in the back playing with my (driver) temperature or fan speed (or audio for that matter) is not the greatest feature :-(

Is there something broken in my car or are they supposed to be working that way? If that's by design, how to turn it off (short of cutting off the wires to the back controller)

thanks

it was a dumb, cheap design-it appeared to be a tri-zone system, but was really a 2 zone system with the rear and driver side as one but controlled from front or back.lexus has real 3 zone system with separate system for the rear.no over ride available that year for q,another oversite or penny pinching move-I believe newer q has lockout function for rear ontrols, but still no independant rear hvac unit, unlike the competition.porsche had 2 air conditioner option{front/rear} on the 928 years ago,in such a small car with 2 compressor/evaporators,so it is not an esoteric option that nissan couldnt have easily duplicated for their flagship!

Designed for executives being driven so the executive could set the AC like he wanted.

"Executive" explanation makes perfect sense, thanks. I have seen very few of those cars in US/privately driven (and none except mine with a small kid in the back). In Tokyo/Japan they are very common (under names like Nissan Cima and others), and all which I have seen were chauffer driven.
