Where might one find stainless steel piping to make your own cat-back exhaust for your car. How well does this work? What does it sound like? Any suggestions?

Well, if you have to make any bends, they won't be as good as say a mandrel bent cat back system. (well unless you have a mandrel bender) I have no idea where you could find stainless steel pipe, I'm thinking a plumbiong supply store, but I don't think that stainless steel gets used in plumbing.

just go to a welding shop and ask them to weld on strigh pipes and a muffler on the end. its very illegal for street cars, but it would be your cheapest and most horsepower gain.

I'm looking to make my own cat back system (got access to a metals shop) that sounds far from rice. Does pipe dia make a large difference in the sound, more rice or not? would 2.5 be too much for a n/a.

Fabricating an exhaust system is NOT for the uninformed.

At best, you'll get lucky and get everything perfect. At worst, you'll wind up with something that sounds horrible and costs you power.

If you really want to tackle it, BRM makes a tubing kit that consists of all mandrel-bent piping, wherein you supply your own hangars, muffler and resonator, and weld it all up yourself.

Placement of the resonator is critical for sound, and varies based upon the piping diameter and resonator size.

But I can guarantee it won't save you any money, you're better off buying one that's been methodically tested, tuned for sound, and has lots of satisfied owners.

Why attempt making your own when there are x-amount of muffler shops in a given area? If you can't get a BRM (the most affordably-priced, well made exhausts out there) then go to a muffler shop at least.

Now if you were referring to building an exhaust for a golf-cart, crush-bent would be fine.
